Please allow substitutions, Omaha Steaks

Write a Letter to this Company
Dear Mr. Simon,
I have been a customer of Omaha Steaks for over three years, ever since your company opened a retail location in Des Peres, Missouri in August of 2006. Both my husband and I enjoyed your products and purchased them every other month.
Sadly, however, this has not been the case for the past six months and I will explain why. Your Ideal Gift, which has been run under different names in the past (Perfect Gift, Perfect Grill, etc.), contains an item that both my husband and I cannot eat – crab. We love everything else. The steaks are juicy, the hamburgers delectable, the pork chops are amazing. Yet we’re stuck with an item that we can’t eat and do not have any friends close enough to give this item to.
My attempts at trying to get this item substituted for another of equal or lesser value – say chicken breasts or any other item not seafood related - in your retail store have been met with refusal and I am forced purchase this item, only to have it languish in my freezer until I throw it out. This, in my eyes, is a complete waste of money and (no pun intended) leaves a bad taste in my mouth for your concern for customers who have dietary exceptions. You are, unintentionally, excluding customers who would otherwise be bringing in money to your stores.
What I am asking is for consideration when it comes to customers with dietary exceptions in your retail stores. Yes, I can call and place an order and get a substitution there, but I am then forced to pay shipping, just for the privilege of not getting an item that will make us sick. I don’t see how this is fair to your customers.
Please consider this request and allow your loyal customers with dietary exceptions to make substitutions within reason at your retail stores.

You don't have to be close to someone to give them the crab. Give it to a neighbor or coworker.

you know that's not a bad idea
i don't know if they'll do it but...
there are people out there who are allergic to seafood or shellfish items
and there could always be a chance that in taking the fish item out of the package that the allergic person could end up touching the flesh.
which could trigger an allergic reaction
(ok maybe not, with all the packaging... but it'd be a good reason to tell them at least)
=)

It beats throwing it out, if you can't donate it somewhere or give it away. If all else fails, if there are other customers in the store ask if anyone wants some free crab. I'll bet you'll get some takers!

I am asuming this Ideal Gift combination is a good deal even if you do not use the crab. I cannot fathom that you otherwise would be purchasing it.
If you are unable to have a substitution for whatever reason and you are concerned about wasting food, then why not just omit the offensive crab from the package when you order/purchase it at the store?
You still are getting the good deal on the rest of the items and at the same time are not buying something you will not use.
It is not the best solution, but at least you will not have to store then discard something you do not want.

why that pesky shellfish thrown in irritates you. I live on red meat. Medium rare burgers, steaks, mmmmmmm. Lamb, the other red meat. I have four ribeyes sitting in the fridge right now. Sadly, I can only eat one at a time. I'll have to freeze the remainder until such time that I can consume them. So much meat, so little time.
I agree that throwing seafood into the mix seems a bit odd. I guess this is to appeal to those poor souls who don't consume red meat or pork. My dad lived on red meat, until he died. He was a really happy guy. Using chicken in place of the crab is a good idea.

I have ordered from Omaha Steaks for many years. There is one package they offer with sole. I do not like fish so I am in the same boat as you. However I still order the package any give the sole to my parents. You say you do not have anyone to give the crab meat to. What about your neighbors or a local food pantry or homeless shelter.
I think Omaha offers package deals to get rid of excess inventory. It also gives people to try a little bit of everything Omaha has to offer. If you do not like certain items in a package deal, you have the ability to purchase things seperately. Of course you will pay more but then this way you are not wasting food.

to not allow a substitution for a specially priced offer. They set the price based on what they put in the box. If you want something else in the box, then you really don't want the special (and at the special price).
If I've read this correctly, you're buying this stuff at a store. Why not try their Web site? They have so many options, it's wild. (I just ordered some stuff from them.) I'm sure you can find a combo closer to your tastes at a good price. Many times, shipping is free.

WE have the same taste! My freezor has that exact item in it from the same special! I was just thinking today I need to pack it on some ice and take it with me for the holidays to someone that will eat it!

I'm basically with you on this, but for one thing. They DO allow substitutions via mail, just not in the retail stores, if I understand correctly. When you purchase the package in a store, is it already made up, in a box or what have you? Because I can see why they wouldn't allow subs in that case. Even if the items are in the stores individually, it may have something to do with inventory levels - they may have the exact number of items on hand to make a certain number of the packages, and if they have to take out one item and sub it with another, that's at least one less package they can make. Online/mail order is likely a different set up and they can put together individual packages for you with less trouble. I know it stinks that you have to pay extra (shipping) to get what you want, but at least you can get it.
