Pull the Focus on the Family Superbowl Ad, CBS

Posted Wed January 27, 2010 12:00 pm, by Teresa T. written to CBS Television Network

Write a Letter to this Company

All major networks hosting the Super Bowl have denied ad space to political candidates and organizations including PETA, MoveOn.org, and the United Church of Christ. Focus on the Family has an unmistakable anti-choice, anti-birth-control, anti-sex-education, anti-gay agenda. If that isn't bad enough, its views on women are just plain insulting and dangerous. I plan on watching the SuperBowl 30 minutes late just so I can fast forward through your commercials. Now all your advertisers will suffer. Now I have yet another reason NOT to watch your network!

DO NOT AIR THE HATE AD!

I read most of the replies here and abortion is a bogus issue when
most the birth control pills work by making the lining of the uterus
too thin so the fertilized egg can't implant, that sounds like an
abortion to me. Millions of women world-wide use birth control pills
which cause millions of abortions everyday, whether they realize it
or not!

Some replies here say that people should practice safe sex, that might
help prevent a pregnancy, but it won't prevent the spread of HPV
(human pampoloma virus)which can be spread regardless of condom use
because the virus can live on the skin the condom doesn't cover. HPV
can also be spread by any skin to skin contact, like French kissing.
There is no safe sex from sexually transmitted diseases any longer,
the only choices are abstaining or getting Gardasil injections
(available only for young boy and girls under 26 years old) and hope
the vaccine works against one or more of the 135 strains of the virus
that you have contracted via sexual contact.

The people who got all uppity and whiny before this ad even came on:

1. Never saw the ad before complaining.
2. Never saw a script before complaining.
3. Only attacked the ad because of the group delivering the message,
not who was telling their story or what they had to say.
4. Lost ALL credibility when the ad aired and not one word about
abortion was mentioned.
5. Are getting laughed at now for trying to say that said ad "promotes
violence against women" because of a CGI tackle.
6. Are taking the focus away from REAL violence against women by
attacking this ad over the idea of a college-age football player who
would jokingly tackle his mother.

I guess people also forget that CBS is a corporation and can dictate
their own programming and what they want to air. YOU as a private,
individual citizen can just choose to not watch their programming. How
difficult is that?

The Super Bowl is not the time or place to air political
agendas.Neither are the Oscars or the Grammy Awards.ABC is in bed with
Disney.Disney has always had a rather Victorian attitude towards
politics.
I am pro choice and proud to say so.I personally could care less what
this might say about me and I could give a toss about Tim Tebow's
mother's decision to not have an abortion.I won't change my mind one
iota.
I'd like to know how she would handle it if she had a thirteen year
old daughter who was brutally raped, traumatized and basically ruined
because of what happened to her.She would force that child to have a
baby? That is one of the reasons I am pro choice.

Why not allow ads from everyone, like a free speech kind of deal?

Is this a "HATE AD"? As I understand it, the commercial doesn't
contain the words abortion or pro-life.

I happen to come down on the side of abortion, but I am also a
supporter of loving families. This commercial seems to be overtly
about the latter. If there are undertones of a slant against the
former, well, so be it. I don't really find it offensive, myself.

I guess the BIG DEAL is whether the law is ever changed. Why not
allow everyone a voice in the meantime?

To start I only support abortion inthe cases of incest, rape, or
mothers endangerment.

Everyone knows that birth control is not 100%. Yet they choose to
engage in the behavior that could lead to pregnancy.

If it's your right to have sex, than you are responsible for the
outcome. I don't believe Someone has the right to destroy life because
of an "unintended" outcome.
You know the risks associated with it. You want to avoid the potential
outcome? Don't engage in the behavior.

It is what it is. There are no rights without responsibilites.

by BigShot Posted Fri January 29, 2010 @ 3:34 PM

I realize that this is somewhat off-point from the ad itself, and this
post may well get deleted. I have read a number of comments from
people talking about a woman's right to do with her body as she
wishes, and saying that if we're not going to be financially
responsible for the child if it's born then it's none of our business.
I think there is an important point being missed. There is one
surefire way to make sure that you do not get pregnant, and we all
know what is. Now, I'm not going to be one of these people saying
that if you have sex outside of marriage and get pregnant you're going
to hell. Obviously, there are cases such as rape victims where the
women were not willing participants. But to hear some people talk
about this issue, you would almost think the women were pregnant
through no fault of their own. I'm sorry, but it takes two to tango.
If you choose to have sex, then you choose to live with the
consequences of your choices. And by the way, I'm all for educating
people about protection. I'm not sure we should be passing out
condoms in schools, but I think we do need to educate kids about
protecting themselves. In a perfect world kids would get this
information from their parents, but this is far from a perfect world.
Not everybody comes from a stable home situation. There are a variety
of reasons why a woman would consider an abortion, but let's not
pretend there isn't a way to keep them from being in that situation in
the first place. I think if there's something pro-life and pro-choice
people can agree on, it's getting at the root of the problem which is
encouraging young people to make wise choices with their bodies. Will
all teens suddenly turn abstinent? Probably not, that's why they need
to be educated, preferably by their parents but if necessary by other
responsible adults.

Nobody has actually seen the ad yet (except for CBS) but indications
are it will involve the story of Tim Tebow's mother Pam, who chose not
to have an abortion despite urging from her doctors due to health
complications. It is said to be a celebration of life and a
courageous woman who put her child's well-being ahead of her own. Who
has a problem with that? Why would anybody have a problem with that?
A hate ad, really? Nobody is taking anybody's right to choose away,
Pam Tebow had the choice and she chose life. That's what the ad is
about.

Reply
by Kalphoenix Posted Thu January 28, 2010 @ 5:20 PM

I can see the issue, since even if CBS is allowing any org to post
commercials that meet their guidelines, only the "for profit" high
profile organizations (if they are spending the money on spreading
their religious beliefs, it is for profit) will be able to afford the
space.

But that's fair I suppose. After all, if FotF is heavy handed with
the commercial, they are only going to gain more opposition than
support, and CBS will take the flack for letting it air in the first
place, especially if it can be proven that they have "denied" other
commercials of a similar vein, so everyone involved REALLY has to
weigh their options on what is "appropriate."

I'm not sure if all their information is correct, which is always a
needler for me, but it is also OP's right to express their opinions to
CBS, and choose not to support them, if they so choose and in whatever
non-violent, legal fashion they choose. They have done so here.

Reply

by dulynoted (aka duttycalls) Posted Thu January 28, 2010 @ 4:02 PM

Sorry but money is money and CBS is in this to make money not support
the views of political, religious or any other organization.
I bet if these organizations would pony up the 3 mil CBS is requesting
for ad time CBS would then give them their requested time slot. But
they will not because they are not for profit organizations and depend
on donations and such.
Maybe Pam Anderson should cough up the 3mil...she seems to have the
money and is a supporter of PETA and other organizations.

What I cannot understand is that you are saying how anti-choice,
anti-birth-control and anti everything CBS is but you will still watch
the Super Bowl. Guess we all have our priorities.

Reply

It is my opinion that if they want to pay the $3 million for the ad,
let them do it. Just because you disagree with the message doesn't
mean that a group must be silenced. Our fundamental rights guarantee
the freedom of speech. If CBS is reversing the policy, and Focus on
the Family wants to take advantage of this opportunity, then so be it.
Whoever wants to air an ad, and pays the price, should be able to do
it as long as it is not obscene or illegal.

I personally disagree with abortion, but I am not emailing
PlanetFeedback telling them to immediately ban you from the site so I
don't have to hear your opinion. I read what you had to say and
disagreed. I think you, and focus on the family, should be able to
express your opinions without being silenced.

Also, I don't see how it is a hate ad. On google, I found that this ad
tells a story of how a mother who refused an abortion had a child that
was highly successful. I don't see any hate, birth control, sex
education, or gay agenda issues addressed.

Reply

by hussyinterrupted Posted Thu January 28, 2010 @ 12:48 PM

What is wrong with this ad? They are not preaching anything. They
are simply telling a story. Yes I am a pro-choice woman. But when I
say choice, I mean CHOICE not just pro do whatever ya feel at the
time. A woman has the responsibility of thinking through every angle
before making the decision to have an abortion. There is nothing
wrong with letting it be known that you're choice to keep the child
could lead to a heisman trophy winner, or a doctor who cures cancer,
or lawyer or hell even president of the united states. The unborn
child could be anything good or bad if given the chance to grow up.
Its just a statement of fact.

Why is it that so many other pro-choicers want to take the choice of
life out of the equation?

Normally I'd say this is about free speech, and though I admit I'm no
fan of Focus on the Family, I'd say that CBS has a right to air
whatever ad they feel is appropriate (within FCC guidelines of
course).

However, if CBS is also refusing to run ads by other religious
organizations (and Focus on the Family does have its basis in
Christianity), then I don't see why FotF is getting special
treatment.

The US government gives you the right to free speech. This gives you
the right to express opinions and ideas without hindrance, and
especially without fear of punishment.

This does not mean a non-government entity, like the CBS corporation,
does not have the right to choose what they air. Could you go into
work and talk all kinds of crap about your boss and then claim you
can't be fired because of free speech? Don't think so...
