Request to re-open account was denied because of medical collection!

I have been with Citibank for over 5 years now. In 2008, due to my knee surgery, I was out of work and couldn't make my payments anymore (I missed 3 times). Once I was able, I made payment arrangements by calling Citibank and have been making timely payments every since. Citi's customer service was great!

However, a year and a half later, I requested Citi to re-open my account in writing. They pulled my credit report and due to two medical collections, they denied my request to re-open the card. I sent another letter requesting a reconsideration and explained the two medical collections. They denied me again. They also said it doesn't matter whether the collection is paid or not.

I just don't understand what my two MEDICAL collections has to do with my account with Citi. As long as I'm paying on time, does that matter? It seems like I'm the only American with medical collections. Medical bills don't show credit worthiness or whether a person is responsible or not. My ability to pay should be sufficient. I love Citibank and I'm very upset that they won't even reconsider my request and give me a second chance. I guess client relationships and loyal clients mean nothing to them.

I would like Citibank to re-open my account.

Bill has a very good response. Check with your local credit union(s)
and compare these to the banks in your area. Most times they are more
lenient and will give you a debit card or a secured credit card.
Also try a local bank...some are still around and have not been sucked
up by the bigger national banks.

About 5 years ago I had a similar issue with Citibank. I had to quit
my job due to a car accident that severely injured me. I could no
longer do the same type of work and had to look for a less physical
job. In the meantime I became 60 days late on my Citibank card- it did
not go to collections. After the 60 days, not only did I make a
payment, but I paid the card in full. This was the only time that I had
ever been late. They would not open my account back up. They told me
to ask again in 6 months. After the 6 month time period I didn't
bother to ask them to re-open it. I have since had no bad credit, I've
never had a collection on my report and my score sits in the 700's. I
recently (5 years LATER) applied for a Citibank card and they denied
it, stating that their reason was because I'd had problems with my
past Citibank account. Citibank doesn't seem to like to give people
second chances for any reason. It may be time to try a different bank
because I don't see you getting anywhere with them any time soon.

Russell C. H.,

From what you write I assume that you are still paying on this debt.

I think the most you can expect is once you get done paying it off you
could re-apply.

In the mean time applying for a Secured Credit Card might be an
approach to starting to fix your credit moving forward.

People that haven't experienced hardship don't know what it's like to
live paycheck to paycheck and face this world...and this unfortunate
recession. I went to school, got a Bachelors...and all I get thrown in
my face is "you're overqualified" or "take this 15 hr a week job that
pays $7.50/hr or leave".

I'm working hard to pay off my debt but I guess when you go down once
for unfortunate circumstances, no one gives you a second chance...

OP: Are you eligible for Navy Federal Credit Union????

It's not that difficult to get med. coll off of your reports.

Things DO happen in real life, we don't know what's around each
corner.

You CAN get this worked out though...

Am I missing something? Is not the fact that bills were let go to
collections a measure of a person's credit worthiness?

In my mind, the act of giving you service and billing you later is a
form of credit.
