Fee's, Fee's and more Fee's.

Posted Tue April 6, 2010 10:07 pm, by Chris M. written to Spirit Airlines

Write a Letter to this Company

I do a lot of travelling for both business and pleasure. Much of that travel is in the air. With the passing of NWA over to Delta, I've looked at using new airlines more often where it makes sense.

I was recently heavily considering Spirit for future travel to Florida for my family and I. This is no longer the case - ever. Your new fee structure, not just for checked bags now, but also for carry ons?! The carry on fee is overboard. I'm so sorry that you are likely having issues with boarding load/unload times and with lack of bin space availability. However, what did you (and others) think when you started with all of these excessive fees. That's not our fault, as travelers!

My family and I will never step on another Spirit Air flight as long as these fee's are in place. You are a budget airline that's not commanding excessive pricing. Good luck with that business model. I'd rather drive than fly with you and could not be more turned off by this arrogant decision.

In the meantime, I think you forgot a few fees as revenue sources, but feel free to use my ideas free of charge. Please make sure you start charging for oxygen, overhead lighting (you can charge by seat per minute the light bulb is on), use of the lavatory, etc.

Regards,
Chris

Actually part of their "enhanced business model" includes more nickel
and diming people. Now everyone must check in at a kiosk, and if you
want to speak with an agent at the ticket counter it will cost $10.00
per person. Just as an FYI, the agents are encourged to sell sell sell
as everyone gets a cut of the $$$$$$ from all fo the extra fees.

This is what happens when you fly these "discount" airlines. They
gotta make a profit somehow.

At least the more full-service airlines aren't quite this
fee-happy----yet.

I have to agree with you on this one. I can, as others have said,
kinda agree with a bag fee, as it covers the labor of getting my bag
on, transferring it, getting off, etc. Even if a crew member has to
shuffle some bags around during boarding, it is far less labor then
used for a checked bag.

I think more of people that need carry ons, such as mother with
children (I hope they bring a larger bag filled with snacks,
activities, change of clothes, diapers, etc). Sometimes this just
cannot fit under a seat and must go in an overhead bin, and I would
hate to be on a multi hour flight with a parent of a child who was
hungry, dirty, or just bored and whiny.

I also think of one of my relatives, who travels with a CPAP machine
that is too large to fit under the seat and cannot be checked for
obvious health reasons. And finally, I think of the times I've
traveled back home to Minnesota in the winter and carry on an enormous
winter jacket that for sure does not fit under my seat just in case my
luggage doesn't get there (and I need a winter coat there in Jan!).

Just seems like another way for a discount airline to make money.

at least they're not charging to use the bathroom like Ireland's
Ryanair. they just announced that on short flights they will start
charging one euro or pound per visit.

i wonder if they have a "beer and bathroom" combo?

I'm with you on this. I could care less about this particular fee
itself. It's the fact that these "discount" airlines are now nickel
and diming you with all of these misc. fees. I get that all airlines
are charging fees these days for certain things. However, it seems to
me that the discount airlines are the worst. After having to make an
emergency trip back to my hometown a couple of months ago, I
discovered that even though the discount airlines may have better
ticket prices to begin with...It was just as economical to go with a
larger airline. I was able to receive an assigned seat when I booked
(with no fees), I was able to print out my boarding pass at home, and
I was given a complimentary beverage and snack during the flight.

I actually think that people with carry on bags that are gate checked
should be subject to the same fees as those of us who properly check
our luggage at the counter. So many passengers are taking items onto
the plane that they know full and well cannot be a carry on. They get
to gate check it without a fee. Good for them, I suppose for getting
around the system (which, by the way, I strongly disagree with and now
fly on Southwest at every opportunity because of this). But, I don't
disagree with charging baggage fees to customers who gate check.

I do disagree with giving them priority boarding and charging just for
the use of the overhead bins. Pretty soon they are going to charge
for the use of the overhead light.

People who insist on bringing the largest possible bags then cramming
them into the over head bins end up costing the rest of us time.

I think planes should deboard FIRST the passengers with nothing in the
overhead bins, and THEN everyone else.

I'm fine with the fee for using the overhead bins (the fee does not
apply to those of us who bring a bag small enough to fit under the
seat in front of us).

I do not like the checked baggage fee, and I have felt all along that
that it's the overhead bin users who should pay.

Checked baggage is large labor cost by jeishere Wed April 7, 2010 @ 3:05 PM

I didn't consider that by Donno Wed April 7, 2010 @ 8:59 PM

If the airlines want to speed up boarding and deplaning, then the
airlines need to enforce the size of the carry ons. I have seen way to
many people try to board a plane with carry ons the size of a small
trunk. Carryons are not meant to be the size of a checked bag.

If Spririt wants to charge for a carry-on then they should get rid of
fees for checked bags.

What's next, charging $12.00 for a ticket, but then charging to enter
and exit the plane, carry on luggage, checking lugagge, going to the
bathroom, looking out the window, soda, snacks.

Yes, they are going to start charging to use the restrooms by RedheadwGlasses Wed April 7, 2010 @ 6:31 PM

The big airlines are watching this too. If there is no big backlash
about this fee then the bigger airlines will adopt this.

When you pay $8.00 to fly spirit fees are expected.

It still didnt stop me from using them and flying round trip to mass
for $120.00

Also I just saw the news yesterday that they were "condidering" adding
fees for luggage in the overhead bin, not carryon luggage. Last time
I flew there were no fees for overhead bin or carryon, but there was
for checked baggage.

PS

Im a member so I get the special rates. You also need to leave when
the provide the flight you cant pick and choose times for the cheap
flights.

Ive never even heard of Spirit Airlines.

I dont have a problem with the fees.

Its aggravating that people are avoiding checking luggage(to avoid
fees) and are stuffing the overhead bins full of their luggage.

Fewer bags up top mean its faster getting on and off the plane
without having to wait for some chump trying to stuff his bag in an
overhead bin.

They justify the fees for having someone to man the lines looking for
over the size luggage. It makes sense. This is what happens when
travelers cannot follow the rules. More employees to police the line,
means more fees, they dont work for free.

Good Day

I've never had the fortune to actually USE the overhead bins. by olie Wed April 7, 2010 @ 9:08 PM

by Donno Posted Tue April 6, 2010 @ 11:45 PM

Their argument is that the cost per seat for the average traveler will
go down, and people will be more likely to pack more carefully if they
have to pay for the overhead storage.

It sounds like the kind of thing that will take time to evaluate.
Some people thought the charge for checked baggage that most airlines
adopted would be gone by now, but it stuck.

The ala carte model is an interesting one, and frankly I tend to lean
towards it. However, the reality that I would have to pay $30 extra
to carry a bag of my clothes on board does take the wind out of my
sails a bit.
