NO DISCOUNT FOR NO TOMATOES

Posted Sun April 11, 2010 7:51 pm, by Mark H. written to Burger King

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I went through the drive-thru window of a Burger King located near Culebra and 1604. I asked for a burger with everything including cheese. The employee said they had no tomatoes. I asked if I got a discount for having no tomatoes and she said no. I asked her if this was the manager's decision and she said yes.

I reckon we won't be eating anymore at Burger King because of this policy of charging the same price for a lessor burger.

Have the existing manager of this Burger King or the new manager of this Burger King apologize to me personally for this huge mistake!

I found the following review online:

WE just moved over here to Culebra and 1604, my husband ordered a Texas double cheesburger meal and within hours of eating from here he became VERY VERY ill from food poisioning. He vomitted throughout the night and into the morning. Luckily I ate something different as did my kids (we had chicken tenders). I know that had we not ate there he would have been fine, I WILL NEVER, NEVER eat at this Burger King again!!‎

I think you have a good point, that paying the same for less is not
ideal and should be addressed. But, I don't know if your response is
commensurate to the situation and including the online review seems
odd to me and totally unrelated.

While being upset is understandable, at the same time, thinknig of
what would really suit the situation may be a better spin on your
letter...

We all know there are buttons for "cheeseburger" "Whopper" etc. and
they are linked to a computer that dictates the price when you press
that button.

Now, I don't know how hard it is to reprogram the system or if it's
cost effective to hire someone to do it if it's just a temporary
condition, but I DO know that they charge extra if you WANT tomatoes,
so the price of tomatoes on a sandwich is already determined. That
being the case if it's just a few keystrokes, it shouldn't be too
complicated.

They could also upgrade your drink to the larger size for free during
the no-tomatoes time (not that I am for pushing that extra sugar into
your meal!)

I don't really know what kind of apology you're looking for.

"I'm sorry we charged you the same price you always pay even when you
didn't get your beloved tomatoes. Is that really what you want?
Maybe a free burger on a return visit would make more sense.

In a strange way, I actually understand your complaint.
If, say, I purchased a brand new car with no tires, there would be no
argument against your letter. But, because tomatoes are so minute a
detail, people get upset by your letter.
But, the truth is, tomatoes are negligible. And yeah, you are right,
we aren't getting the entirety of what we are paying for. But, at the
same time, is this really a battle worth fighting for?
Only you can determine that. Perhaps we will have you to thank in
years to come. Had you made the same arguments to Breyers and other
ice cream companies, we would still be buying ice cream in half gallon
containers. Instead, about a decade ago, they slimmed it down to 1.75
quarts. Today, it's 1.5 quarts. I suspect in another 8 years, we'll be
down to 1.25 quarts, and in 10 years, we'll be down to 1 quart.
Meanwhile, the specialty ice creams (Hagen Daaz, and Ben n Jerry's,
eg) will be down to a scoop. We accept these slights, and go on.
Meanwhile, the companies charge more and more. So, yes, I see your
point.

On the other hand, I see what can happen if we start demanding
discounts when tomatoes are excruciatingly expensive. (Last I heard,
the wholesale price was $30 a barrel; compared to $7 last year).
As you can see, that's a huge increase. I'm not sure how many tomatoes
are in a barrel; but, imagine which is worse: more than a 4x increase,
and passing that on to consumers, or, dropping them, temporarily.
(Hopefully).
If they start discounting for tomatoes, why not start charging for all
extras? Basic hamburgers, then charge for lettuce, tomatoes, pickles,
onions, ketchup, mustard, relish, and napkins, and for the wrapper.
That wouldn't be good, either.

If you choose to leave off certain items that are included in the
price, that is your choice. The OP was not given a choice. It is very
different.

I'm making is that if I were going to be screaming about tomoatoes
(zomg! no tomatoes, oh noes! the world is going to end), then I'd be
screaming about the other stuff I don't care for either.

Life is too short to make a huge fuss over a petty complaint.

This is standard. You won't get another restaurant to take 50 cents
off your burger because you don't have tomatoes on it.

I don't see why the other person's review of the restaurant is
pertinent to your complaint.

It would have been a nice gesture for them to maybe give you a larger
size of fries or drink since they couldn't provide the tomatoes. Other
than that though I don't really think that tomatoes are worth much
more- how much of a discount did you expect?

with the exception of meat and cheese... last time you asked for extra
whatever, were you charged extra?

It's Burger King. People exclude things from their burgers all the
time. It never changes the price.

You don't want to pay full price, then dont buy it. It's your
decision, not the managers. But if you feel the need to ask if it's
his decision and buy the burger anyways, then go for it.
But don't be expecting an appology.

And the food poisoning thing? What does that have to do with anything?
Is that the only BK complaint you could find?

by PepperElf Posted Mon April 12, 2010 @ 10:44 AM

and what, pray tell, would this discount be?

an entire tomato usually doesn't cost more than a dollar so, say you
get 10 slices for one... at the most you might get a dime off

but then again they would buy in bulk so they'd get tomatoes cheaper
so maybe the discount would only be 5 cents

and there may be people who would feel justice at getting a ¢5
discount but... i suspect many people are asking for more perhaps?

so what kind of discount are you talking? by PepperElf Wed April 14, 2010 @ 6:57 PM

by CrazyRedHead Posted Mon April 12, 2010 @ 9:38 AM

I always tell BK and others ff chains no onions, I don't ask for a
discount and I don't get bent out of shape over it. I have my own
tomato plants growing in my back yard and if I go out to eat I slice a
couple up, put them in a zip lock baggie and take them with me.

Do you get a discount if you only drink half of your Coca cola?

Do you get a discount if you eat your chicken tenders plain, even
though you get a sauce included?

Good Day

Many restaurants in my area have signs that say they are out of
tomatoes due to extremely cold weather in the growing regions. This is
something beyond Burger King's control.

I do however have to agree with you regarding the discount. The
"recipe" calls for tomatoes as they are a standard ingredient on many
of the burgers. If they are not giving you the full product, I can see
a small discount being offered upon request.

What does an alleged food poisoning incdient have to do with "no
tomatoes"? There is no mention of customer service or tomatoes, so it
seems completely unrelated. Unless tomatoes made the customer sick,
in which case you should be pleased you received none.

It was your choice to buy or not buy the burger at regular price, once
you knew the tomatoes were not available.

Does BK reduce the price if the customer asks for "no tomatoes"?

I can answer that by ST Sun April 11, 2010 @ 11:01 PM

by NathanG Posted Sun April 11, 2010 @ 7:57 PM

There is alot of BKs doing no tomatoes due to the frost we had. Right
now tomatoes are really expensive.\

And what does another review about food poisoning have to do with no
tomatoes?
