VW's Misuse of the Slugbug Make Me Want to Punch Someone! (in the arm)
Posted Thu May 13, 2010 12:00 pm, by Angela N. written to Volkswagen of America, Inc.
Write a Letter to this Company
Recent VW commercials depict people hitting their friends (or salesperson) on the shoulder every time they see a VW in a showroom or driving by on the road.
I don't know who is writing your commercials, but the punch on the shoulder is ONLY for when you see a VW Beetle (aka Bug). Not for any random VW vehicle.
This is common knowledge and even described in Wikipedia.
I urge you to CEASE this ridiculous, stupid, and WRONG commercials.

Prepared to get sued for assualt and battery. I would never buy from a company that actually advocates that you hit another person when you see their automobile.
Sad, very sad :(

Amen! VW Punch Buggie not VW Any punch! I mean come on VW at least hire someone who knows what the hello they're advertising! Those commercials do not I REPEAT DO NOT make me want to by a Volkswagen, instead it makes me want to pickit Volkswagen for their stupidity! I used to love VW bugs cause their advertising was fun and original but instead like everything good in the past someone has to go screw it up! That's all I have to say! Be Smart Advertise Smart Don't Play Down to Your Customers Trust Me They'll Appreciate it and You!

I think part of the it might have to do with them not making the Volkswagen Beetle any more.. 2010 is the last year for them...

Agreed. Stupid ads.
The company is trying to make a game with their brand and it'll fail miserably as everyone knows you only punch someone if you see a VW BUG.

LOL-I thought the same thing when I saw the commercial. It's really a lame campaign.

For PETE'S SAKE VW that game is called "slug bug" for a reason. You don't "slug" on every VW ever made.
My 14 year old son said "mom, that commercial is so stupid, you're only suppose to slug when you see a VW Bug"

Angela, you crack me up! :)
My husband and I said the same thing actually. We saw this commercial last weekend and said, "Ummm, aren't you only supposed to do slugbug when it's a VW bug?"
I have a 98 VW Cabrio. Maybe I should do, "Slug Cabrio...no slug back."
See? It's just not the same thing.

Beetles and even Vanagons are distinctively shaped. I'm not finding that the current crop of VWs really stand out.
And we're kinda-sorta looking for a new vehicle. We are noticing a lot of features on vehicles. These VWs aren't doing it for us. They blend in.

How about the Westfalia, Karmann Ghia, VW pickup truck? Those were distinctive, though they mostly "stand out" of junk yards and abandoned hedgerows now...
And of course, what about The Thing?
Somewhere along the line VW fell off track...
Seriously, VW's do blend in now, but that is the trend.
