Puny Portions Down Under at Outback

I recently visited my local Outback Steakhouse and ordered my favorite appetizer, the cheese fries. To my disappointment, the portion I received was significantly smaller than what it usually is. When I asked the waitress if we got the right order, she said that it was correct and it was the full size. I told her that this looks much less than usual but she insisted that it's correct. A manager later came out and brought out another order which was the same size. When she gave it to us, she made a comment like, "I hope this is better" but in a condescending manner, as if I'm crazy and don't know what I'm talking about. I've been going to this Outback location since it was first built 10-15 years ago and it has never ever been that small and it's never been that small at any other Outback I've visited. All of us at the table were all in disbelief of the size because we all go there often enough to know the portion of the cheese fries.

I would like to know if Outback has downsized the portion sizes and if that's the case, then own up to it and not make me feel like I'm stupid or something. I'm certain I've been going there much longer than the average server has worked there and I know what I've seen for the past 10+ years. To make a comment like that was pretty rude and insulting especially since I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that these portions were significantly less than usual.

Overall, I've been very satisfied and have loved Outback Steakhouse; however, this experience has tainted my feelings for the restaurant. I don't appreciate being made a fool. I am a paying customer and should not have to get hassled when I bring up a fact about my order.

The Outback location is in Edison, NJ 08817.

Thank you for your time in this manner and I hope to hear back from someone shortly.

Regards,

Sharone G.

The last time I was at Red Lobster, which was at least four years ago,
the lunch selections Mom and I ordered were so downsized and puny that
both my mother and I complained about it to the waitress, so she
admitted Red Lobster cut down the lunch menu portion sizes and that
was our last visit to Red Lobster, we never returned.

I don't think the issue was primarily the portion size by Eclipse Wed June 9, 2010 @ 2:00 PM

let's say Outback removed 3 fries and 1/3 squirt of cheese. Outback
would clearly make money, and most diners wouldn't even notice.

What would OP like? "Welcome to Outback. In an effort to cut prices,
we're slashing all of our serving sizes."

Then, when the waitress comes over: "We have slashed the size of our
cheese fries. You'll pay the same price, but you'll get 1/3 less
potato and 1/3 less cheese sauce. You can upsize for only $X.YZ, if
you'd like to share."

I know, for example, that if I think about a shrimp cocktail, I'll ask
how many shrimp are included for the price. For cheese fries, or a
bloomin' onion, I might not that the portion was not so huge.

I agree, when you said it was much less than usual, they should have
said something about it being downsized, if indeed it was. It is not
right to just beat around the facts.

They told you it was correct. Then they made another in an attempt to
satisfy you, even though it was identical to the first one.

Does it matter if it has been downsized, if what they gave you is
correct? Now you know, and can either order it or not.

I personally gave up on that chain. The service sucked, and too often
the food did as well.

a manager should know by Sharone G. Thu June 10, 2010 @ 2:30 PM

should be? by PepperElf Thu June 10, 2010 @ 3:42 PM

I'm not sure I'm necessarily in agreement with a previous poster that
the downsized portions should be noted on the menu. Let's face it,
most every place is having to make up for the rising costs in some
manner. Whether it's by raising prices for the same amount of food,
downsizing the portions, changing the ingredients etc. etc. No matter
how a restaurant chooses to cut corners, there's always going to be
some customers that are unhappy about the change.

I do think the server and/or manager should have said something to the
effect of "We've recently had cut the appetizer portions". The OP is
right, if they did indeed cut the portion sizes, they should own up to
it when asked about it.

Everywhere you look, places have downsized their portions. Most of it
is due to the rising cost of food. Charging people the same amount for
less is starting to become the norm. Look in your grocery stores, I'm
sure you'll see a lot of items are smaller, but they're still the same
price.

This practice isn't going to change anytime soon. Ever since the
economy went down the toilet, lots of places have been downsizing a
lot or changing their menus altogether. Places that used to offer two
sides and a salad now count the salad as a side and only really offer
one side.

Places that used to offer bread, chips or other items while waiting
for your meal have now stopped or charge a small fee in order to get
them.
