UNCLEAR automatic subscription renewal practices

Posted Sun June 13, 2010 3:00 pm, by rachel h. written to Eharmony

Write a Letter to this Company

I got an email out of the blue that said they had automatically renewed my subscription and taken a significant amount of money out of my account and left me with a negative balance. It was never made clear that I had signed up for automatic renewal, and there was definitely no courtesy email about impending charges. Their were also deceptive elements to eharmony's webpage. There were buttons that said "Extend your Membership" implying that if you didn't click the button, you wouldn't have to extend your membership! I also spent a long time hunting for a customer service number on their website, and only found it after using a search engine!

They only gave me a "one time courtesy" full refund after I threatened (and did) file a complaint with the FTC and asked to speak with a manager. Eharmony needs to make this deceptive practice abundantly clear and give courtesy emails to customers before swiping their money- at least giving them a chance to cancel their subscription as a customer has the right todo. They also need to stop pulling a facebook and put their customer service FRONT AND CENTER.

Over the years, I have come across many companies who do that. It is
hidden in the fine print that if you do not cancel your free trial
account, that it will be automatically renewed, charging you.

Be aware of companies that offer free trials but still require a
debit/credit card number.... Those are the ones who will be likely to
renew your account if you fail to cancel it before the trial runs
out.

AOL used to do this, I have not used AOL in years though so am unaware
as to whether or not they still do.

Maybe E-harmony did you a favor by making you upset about their
automatic subscription renewal practices.

Did you realize that 4 out of 10 women between the ages of 25 and 65
who are internet dating have HPV (human papillomavirus) and are
considered high risk for acquiring HPV, and 2 out of the 4 have high
risk (cancer causing) HPV? It's assumed that an equal number of men
or more have HPV, but since there is no HPV testing for men, the
number of infected men can't be determined.

HPV is acquired by skin to skin contact, and the chance of
transmission is 36% after one contact with an infected person, it's so
high contagious! There is an HPV risk when you French Kiss someone
also, because the virus is being transmitted in the saliva. Oral
cancers have been increasing for males at an alarming rate, so the
U.S. government has approved Gardasil injections for males ages 9 to
26.

The only choices you have to reduce your risk of high risk HPV are:
abstain from any physical contact with another person, especially with
males who are high risk HPV symptom-free and there is no medical
testing for them, or get Gardasil injections. There is no saliva test
for either sex, so you will always be at some risk if you are French
kissing your partner or have other mouth contact.

I have a problem with t.v. shows like the Bachelorette, which show one
woman kissing 25 men, with HPV so rampant. Ali and the rest of the
past Bachelorettes must be morons putting themselves at risk of HPV
when men show no symptoms of carrying the deadly virus. How is Ali
going to stop a man from slipping his tongue in her mouth while they
are kissin? Yuk!

I would say you are lucky that E-harmony refunded your money and that
you are no longer a member of the high risk HPV internet dating group,
most people I know aren't dating any longer due to fear of acquiring
HPV or any other STD!

one musician i listen to got sick of it and changed his profile too
all things twisted like...

http://www.gregorkitzis.com/documents/upload/eharmony.pdf

well like that.

according to his website, the new profile - with all the comments that
he wants someone with "numerous sexually transmitted diseases" ... "oh
yeah, and NAPALM", and that the things he cannot live without are
"Satan, Satan, Satan, Satan, air conditioning".... got MORE HITS than
his previous non-twisted one did.

http://gregorkitzis.com/misc.php
he wrote about it there, about halfway down the page.

so whenever i hear about eharmony i think of this letter

Wrong. I was on eharmony. Their auto renewal process was made very
clear upfront. In fact, it's quite standard for the online dating
sites.

I met my husband on the internet by fairywithfangs Mon June 14, 2010 @ 7:42 PM

Neither of us were "hermits" who "can't make it the scene" (whatever
that is). Instead we were two relatively attractive people in our
early to mid 30s who were no longer into the bar scene and were having
trouble meeting people for dating. All of our friends were married,
all of their friends were married, and so on and so on. We've been
married for nearly six years and have a beautiful son that we're
raising. If it hadn't been for Match, I might not have met my
husband.

I wonder what Rowdy is basing his opinion on. Personal experience? An
article he read somewhere that he can cite here?

Better yet, perhaps Rowdy can offer the LW some advice on WHERE to
meet other like-minded people if not on the Internet. I'm sure she'd
appreciate it.

My son met his fiancee on EHarmony two years ago and they are getting
married June 28th. They are both attractive, professional people and
it worked out very well for them.
