Christmas carols ALREADY Sears?

Posted Wed November 3, 2010 12:00 pm, by Denise K. written to Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

Was in the Sears Crabtree Valley Mall store in Raleigh NC on November 3, 2010 and was appalled to discover they were already playing Christmas carols in heavy rotation. Christmas carols!!! Three weeks before Thanksgiving!!

I turned on my heel and left without purchasing what I went there for, and will not return to Sears until after the holidays.

Exercise some reasonableness - I know retailers are nervous this year, but cramming Christmas down our throats isn't going to fix things. Cease and desist all Christmas carols until at least the day after Thanksgiving - or better yet, Dec. 1.

Don't single out one location for this. Sear has a national station
for the music that is played in the store. Don't punish your local
economy for something they have no control over. If it's really that
big of a deal to you, and if you really feel like wasting your time
over something as trivial as Christmas music in November, complain
about it to corporate offices. But good luck, they have more
important things to worry about

A SAD testament to the times. I agree with the letter writer on this
one. Any retailer I found doing this, I walked out as well. It's
just totally rediculous now! Although I am thankful all year long, it
would be nice to have Thanksgiving back! Sheesh!!! It's getting
really rediculous! But it's not just Christmas. December 26, 2010,
we will be beat to death with Valentine's Day merchandise.

One Virginia radio station changed over to all Christmas music
effective today.... it really boggles the mind.

Every single store I have walked into since the day after halloween
has been playing christmas music. And I saw Christmas items up with
the Halloween stuff this year. Why single Sears out?

They need to get ready so the atmosphere is just right when I go
shopping on Thanksgiving day.

You think objecting to carols being played in NOVEMBER is being a
Scrooge?

Businesses DO have control over what they play and when they play it,
and this is EXACTLY the kind of feedback that should be out there -
reasonable discourse explaining the objection and asking for change.

Your reaction is ridiculous. "Sit down and shut up" is NEVER an
acceptable response to criticism.

by BigShot Posted Tue November 16, 2010 @ 7:58 PM

A lot of stores don't have control over what is played on the radio.
I work for a major retail chain and our radio plays a mish-mash of hit
pop-rock songs and advertisements for the store. It is all produced
and piped through from corporate and we have no control over it in the
store. It's been pumping out Christmas music for about a week now.
To my knowledge, we haven't had any complaints. The complaint seems a
little silly (I mean good luck finding a store not playing Christmas
music this time of year) but nevertheless it is good feedback for
Sears.

I think that there are better issues we could be discussing. The
actual complaint about Christmas carols being played in November is
kind of ridiculous, actually no, it is ridiculous. What do you expect?

My reaction is my reaction. "Sit down and shut up" is acceptable in
this complaint. Or in this case for Denise "Walk out and rent Scrooge
to watch at home."

Denise, sorry but I enjoy those tunes. If one hasn't started Christmas
shopping it certainly is a wake up call.It creeps upon us and before
you know it people are shopping on days/times when the stores should
be closed! (Oh that's in reference to another letter).

The Macy's where I live had Christmas stuff going since September.
Whaddaya gonna do?

by Giselle Posted Wed November 10, 2010 @ 7:11 AM

They were trying to establish a festive atmosphere, which might
encourage some impulse Christmas purchases. You can't blame them, they
are in the business of making money and Christmas time is the biggest
time for stores. Playing Christmas music is not a big deal and is
certainly preferable, in my mind, to elevator music.

one of the classic rock stations i listen to switched to christmas
already.

i'd probably listen to it on my drive to work. well if i wasn't busy
listening to The Fellowship Of The Ring (unabridged). Frodo just woke
up in Rivendell and is talking to Gandalf right now.

but if not for that i'd be listening to the carols.

actually what annoys me is that they changed the format of one of the
country stations i listen to. it use to be semi-christian country
(basically non-smutty country mixed with some religious country
songs). now it's christian rock or something like that.

so anyway... yeah FOTR for now on my radio. And then it'll be The Two
Towers. followed by Return Of The King. yeah i have the entire
series on audiobook. might not finish it until after christmas...

The major stores in the malls here have had Xmas decorations up and
items for sale since AUGUST.

It is what it is.

Hardly surprising. My local mall (which i hate) began playing
christmas music on november 1st.

Good luck finding a retailer without christmas music, if you refuse to
shop somewhere based on that, i think it will be a barren christmas
season for your family. Even the grocery stores play christmas music

I urge everyone to take up a one day protest against the wanton
materialism that the Christmas season has become, join me in
celebrating "International Buy Nothing Day". The day after
thanksgiving buy absolutely nothing. Stay away from the mass
retailers, dont even buy a candy bar at a convenience store! Get your
groceries on wednesday before thanksgiving (or earlier to avoid
crowds), make sure you have enough gasoline (in case of emergency),
and enjoy a day at home with your family.

Our American brand of consumerist materialism has perverted the true
meaning of Christmas, which i hold to be the birth of Jesus. If you
have a different belief/faith, just enjoy quality time with your
family, away from the hordes of shoppers, and their pushing and
shoving and total misunderstanding of the meaning of Christmas.

Peace on earth and goodwill to men seems to be completely forgotten at
the stores.

I like Chritmas Carols...I was singing them at work the other day..I
did get a few strange looks. But it does help me to get in the
Christmas mood. I put up my Christams tree the day after Thanksgiving
and dont take it down till after the 1st of the year. I have yet to
hear any retailers playing them though, I did notice that Walmart has
put out some Christmas stuff like ornaments and the trees. I can live
with that.

many years ago. The Dec 1 train, that is.

Then the Thanksgiving demarcation was breeched, several years ago as
well.

This year, retailers are starting even earlier due to the economy. It
isn't a matter of "nerves", it is a business decision. If you are a
Sears shopper, please continue shopping there. Retailers need our
support, and besides they all do this.

Nothing kills christmas songs more than working retail October through
January. Been there, done that.

This is a big reason why my christmas shopping is done online and
before November, so I don't have to set foot in a store unless I
absolutely hmust.

by LadyMac Posted Thu November 4, 2010 @ 11:43 AM

With all the pre "Black Friday" sales they're running, it doesn't
surprise me. They want customers shopping earlier so they're playing
Christmas carols earlier.

After all, I've already started (finished?) my Christmas shopping for
the year. But that's because we decided we didn't need more "things"
and are splurging on a trip to Florida instead.

This has been going on for some time now. The store my husband works
at has been playing Christmas music since just before Halloween. If
that isn't extreme, then there's always the one radio station in our
area that plays nothing but Christmas music starting on Halloween (or
at least they did last year).

Unfortunately it's all part of the Christmas creep. Things start
showing up earlier and earlier. I think you're just going to have to
get used to it.

Kinda like being "appalled" by Christmas carols? I can think of worse
things to be appalled at.
