All they have at the B of A branches here in Arizona is drive-through ATMs. If you need a teller to make a transaction, you have to go inside.
On the other hand, I have encountered pedestrians and bicyclists at the drive-through ATMs. There isn't anyone there to tell them not to (and no signs that I recall). I haven't heard of anyone being hit or run over.

Drive Thru lanes are for people with cars. You didn't have one. Case closed.

BANK OF AMERICA IS AWFUL. I've been using them for years and I would change but they are the only bank in my area. I'm sorry you have to deal with these idiots. I hope people see this and decide not to use them. I could write a book on my BOA complaints!

I agree with the previous posters on the fact that the drive-thru is just that: a DRIVE-thru (as I understand it, it is for security reasons) but I'm just surprised at the fact that BofA would even let you do ANYTHING to your husband's acct without you being on it (I would get it if you had his ATM card but the OP stated that was not the case) As a BofA customer, I've always being carded (ATM or ID) and if I'm not on the account S.O.L. Then again I've never used a D/T teller that has tubes (?).

Try your stunt at any drive through and you will get the same treatment.
It is not a simple company policy, it's an insurance liability. If a nutcase drove up and didn't see you STANDING at a Drive-Thru...again...D-R-I-V-E Thru (There's your sign you were wanting) and slammed into you...I'm sure you'd be sitting in a Courthouse somewhere blaming the accident on the bank itself.

you know there is one good thing from this... you learned that circling the block didn't take as long as you thought.
though i would say... this could possibly be more of a complaint against the GPS rather than the bank because if the GPS had given you the right entrance to use then this wouldn't have happened.

Just one question, does YOUR bank allow you to walk through the DRIVE through?

This is a common policy with business that have drive thru's. Say someone runs you over while you are getting your money or food? The business will be sued. You have no valid complaint here, sorry.

As others have said, it's a DRIVE through, not a walk through. Also, it would be incredibly unsafe (and quite a liability risk for the bank) to allow pedestrians to use their drive through windows.

So are you proposing some state or federal law that mandates drive thrus must accommodate pedestrians?
Should we use tax money to build those sidewalks to your mall that are hardly ever going to get used or should we make new zoning laws that force the mall owner to pay to have sidewalks installed?
I personally feel we should let business run themselves how they see fit. If 99.99% of visitors come to the mall by car and would continue to even if there were sidewalks, why would anyone build them? If 99.999% of my drive through traffic is motor vehicles, should McDonalds be forced to install special equipment to take pedestrian orders since the mechanism the the menu board is usually a metal or weight detector?

The reason that you were refused is because walk-ups at a drive-thru teller (or any drive-thru) are a SECURITY RISK! You might be harmless, but the guy that attempts it after you just might be a bank robber.
You were refused in order to protect the safety of the bank employees. This is standard procedure at every single bank across the U.S. BofA does it, Chase does it, Wells Fargo does it, Fifth Third and so on. Even the little small town banks do it.
No sign should be necessary.

Wow, really?? The sign that said "DRIVE Thru" was not explanatory enough, you need an extra sentence at the bottom that says you must be DRIVING to use it?
There's no sign that says you can't drive you car in the front door of the bank, but I doubt you will be doing that. Let's have some common sense here.

You really need a posted sign telling you NOT to walk through the drive through? Do you also walk through through MCDonalds? Burger King?

Sigh. Or just use the drive through as it's intended: In your vehicle.

Interesting, I've just always assumed that unless you are in a vehicle, you can't use a drive through. I'm one of those who hope we don't end up with signs everywhere telling us everything we can and can't do. Sometimes we learn an assumption we've made isn't true, and we just have to take the lesson and move on. It's our mistake.
And I really am not a fan of BofA, won't ever do business with them, but it does sound a bit like your perception is colored by not wanting to use them either.

You want a SIGN to tell you that you can't WALK up in a DRIVE-THRU????
And I'm sorry, but if it would have taken 8 minutes to pull your car around to the other side of the building, there are FAR biggers issues at play here.

There is a reason it is called a "drive" through and not a walk through.

This is a safety issue. It's completely unsafe for a pedestrian to be walking through narrow DT lanes with no easy way to escape.
Escape what? you ask. A car that is sliding on the icy road. A person who hits the gas instead of the brake. Your basic parking lot/DT idiot who drives fast and screeches to a halt.
As a driver using a bank's DT , I look for cars or trucks or minivans or SUVs in a DT. Not someone on foot or on a bicycle or in a shopping cart.
You mentioned the cold weather, which made your walk to the bank unpleasant. You'd be even colder by standing outside in what is basically a small wind tunnel.
