Your store is the ONLY store with such a ridiculous exchange policy for gifts.

Dear Edward Lampert:
My daughter received an outfit from a family member for Christmas. It was pants, a shirt and a jacket by the Sears brand South Pole. It was too small. The family member that purchased the items lives far away from us. She specifically chose a store that was nationwide so that we would have no problems exchanging the items if we needed to.
Today we went to the Sears store closest to us in Pleasanton CA. We were told that while Sears does indeed sell the items in question and even though the tags were all still on the items, they would not exchange or return them because we had no receipt.
We went to a department manager and then the store manager and all of them told us that even though they sell the items there was nothing we could do without a receipt.
We were not trying to get money for the items just exchange them for the proper size.
We were then told that our only option was to go to the original store where the items were purchased and only that store could do anything for us. This is a ridiculous policy as we do not live near the original store.
BTW - Sears was our last stop after a day of returning and/or exchanging items that were received as gifts that were too small for the kids. In some cases we had no receipt and no tags but every other store honored the exchanges - those other stores (Kohl's, Macy's, Walmart) will get mine and my extended family's business from now on unless you rectify this.

1. Change their policy on exchanges.
2. Send my daughter a gift card to allow her to purchase like items.
3. Send me a gift card to compensate me for all the nonsense I had to deal with at your store.

I guess you need to get the receipt. Is it really that hard to talk to a family member?

sears does "gift receipts" if i'm not mistaken.
so the person who bought the gift could have given a gift receipt in case it was too small.
as for compensation... since the store did nothing wrong i don't see where they should be required to compensate you...
they're not obliged to make anyone an exception to the policy, so why should they have to compensate someone over it?

Geez, if you are going to mail a gift, mail the receipt, not everyone likes everything the buyer likes, not everything fits, etc.

I agree with one and two, but three is asking a bit much. I do agree they are insane, though. Also, I find it interesting that they are telling you to go to the original store of purchase. How would they even know which store that was without a receipt? For all they know, they could be that store.
I've had my own fair share of problems with Sears. I'll never set foot in there again.

Too bad she didn't include at least a gift receipt. Why can't you contact this relative and tell her about the problem? It's nothing about which to be embarrassed or anything silly like that. Just call her.

You are right, the company did recently implement a no receipt, no return policy. However, I completed many no receipt for exchange over the last several days. It seems that this policy's enforcement varies by store.
Southpole is a national brand and not just a Sears brand. It is also sold at Penny's.
Did they attempt to scan the merchandise? If it did not ring up in their system, then they would be unable to process a return or exchange because they wouldn't know what value to input. Clothing brands vary by stores. Was the merchandise clearance? Was the merchandise "zeroed" out? That means the clothing has no value to the store so a receipt MUST be used.
Try a different Sears and see what happens. By them saying that you have to go to the original store tells me that maybe those products did not ring in the system, therefore, they can't do a return without a receipt because they have no idea what numbers to input or what price to put in.

Call the person that bought the gifts and get the sales check number from them. That might be enough for your local Sears to pull the purchase, if it's been less than 90 days.
