UNHEALTHY PIE CRUSTS

Posted Fri January 14, 2011 10:53 am, by Edna B. written to Pillsbury Company

Write a Letter to this Company

we have been users of the Pillsbury pie crusts but have recently decided to stop using this product because it is extremly unhealthy. It's unbleivable that in todays health conscious world that Pillsbury chooses to us lard in their pie crust. I know it makes it flakey and tasty but also very unhealthy.

Please consider making this product healthy!!

Eliminate the unhealthy ingredients in the Pillsbury dough products.

Thank you!

Unfortunately, this letter could be sent to just about every major
food company in the country. We no longer grow food. We manufacture
food. Most processed food is unhealthy and should be used sparingly.
It's sad that 80% of the grocery store is processed food and the rest
is filled with pesticides and growth hormones.

The definition of "food" has changed and it's the reason we have such
an obesity problem in this country.

Pie is typically unhealthy. Perhaps if you are concerned about your
health you shouldn't eat pie.

but since these easy quick pie crusts are designed for convenience and
not for health consciousness, I would say your alternative is to make
your own at home if you're worried about trans fats and such.

Furthermore, because they are designed for a shelf life, the lard is
the least of your worries from a health standpoint. Do you have ANY
idea all the preservatives that are in those?

And using alternatives would also likely increase the cost of this
product. Are you still willing to buy it if they use healthier
alternatives that raise the price by $1.00 or more?

It makes me wonder... if lard and butter and all those fats are so
horrible and unhealthy, why were people 50+ years ago when that stuff
was used in mainstream cooking in such better shape than people
today?

The obesity epidemic took off after our society became so "health
conscious". Why? Because by being "health conscious" we forgot all
about moderation and actually taking care of ourselves. Who needs to
worry about balanced diet and exercise when we can have food
manufacturers take care of all our problems for us by making our food
"healthy". We see how that worked out.

I didn't know you could make pie crust with anything other then lard
and couldnt imagine what it would taste like if you used something
else. Even if you did use something else (I imagine it would be
something like crisco) it still wouldn't make it healthy by any means.
Its a pie crust.

I also am having a hard time thinking of a "healthy" food you would
make with a pie crust. Everything from quiche to tarts are high
calorie foods.

A lot of celebrity chefs will only use lard in pie crusts. And as
others have pointed out, pie is not the most healthy thing to eat
anyway

What are your preferred substitutions? by olie Fri January 14, 2011 @ 11:57 PM

Maybe even light olive oil. Even so, it's not health food even if you
use whole wheat pastry flour. I say use the white flour, the fat of
your choice, and enjoy it two or three times a year.

I've never successfully made a pie crust. I buy frozen ones and save
myself the frustration.

It'll come out completely disgusting. I've had them made with oil
(from my mom) and they are awful. Alton Brown would cry.

Shortening and lard really are the only way to go for a pie/quiche
crust.

As the others have said, pies aren't exactly healthy to begin with.
Plus, if you don't like their pie crusts, maybe you should learn to
make your own. They really aren't all that difficult.

Lard crusts are the good kind. Pie isn't health food and isn't meant
to be.

Actually, lard isn't all that bad. Certainly better then other things
they could be using. I thought this was interesting:

And honestly, I don't think of the rest of what goes in a pie health
food.
