Really??

My bf and I just started watching Spartacus on DVD.

Blood. Lust. Politics. Blood.

Blood gets listed twice because seriously it has more blood than 300.
Not to mention the "This is madness!" guy is in it too. With a whip.


So far we've gone through the first disc and ... we both like it *so
much* we only watch it when the other is there. Same for Star Trek
TOS and Big Bang Theory.



But you know... think about it. Back in the day of the gladiators...
entertainment WAS blood and lust. Mixed with politics.

Even TODAY that's still going on - look at the bull fights in spain.
it's considered "entertainment" to torture a bull to death.


In comparison... "skins" doesn't sound that nasty.

Wow, just wow. Medium is/was one of the worst shows on television, and
this is pretty bad when we have to suffer foolishness like "Yes Dear",
King of Queens, etc. Anyway whether one likes Medium or not I don't
see what that has to do with Skins? It might make more sense to me if
they were on the same network but they aren't even close. We've got a
network that's shown Murder She Wrote and Medium being compared to a
network showing The Hills, Jersey Shore, etc? What does one thing even
have to do with another here, I am genuinely confused.

The problem with you having the power to bring back one show and get
rid of another just because you liked the old one and don't like the
new one is that then everyone else has to have that power as well.
Obviously that wouldn't work since not everyone has the same taste in
shows so the network has to come up with a way to decided what shows
go and what shows stay. They do that by comparing the shows ratings
and looking at what else the main actor/actors have to do that may
interfere with said show.

The American version of "Skins" is based on a rather critically
acclaimed show from the UK. The UK show's purpose is to tell stories
based on REAL events that happened to REAL teenagers. Teenagers, even
underaged teens, have sex and, just like in real life, there are
consequences for the characters. Ditto for the drug use and other
controversial topics it has covered. The characters do NOT go
unpunished for making stupid decisions, whether by the law or by
life.

And I hate to tell you this, but teenagers were sexualized LONG before
this show hit. In fact, they were sexualized long before television
and radio.

Considering this letter was only titled "Really??" and appears on the
top 25 without explanation of what it is about...

how do you suggest gaining the ability to "not read a letter that
bothers you" ?


Unless you've been upgraded with a physic chip... you cannot make that
decision without actually ... you know, READING the letter.


This is of course different from TV shows since TV shows have bios
available online to describe what the show is about.

Attempting to equate "don't read the letter" with "don't watch the tv
show" therefore does not work as advice since... as I clearly
explained, you don't know what it's about until you read it.


The only thing you can offer then would be perhaps advice to not
comment if you disagree - but there is nothing wrong with disagreeing
or pointing out why a suggestion would not actually work.

I love(d) Medium, but it was time for the show to go. I think Steven
Weber (sp?), the man who plays the husband/father, has other projects
to work on, and the show has been on long enough. It was a WONDERFUL
show and I love how Patricia Arquette stood up to network bosses when
they told her to lose weight ("THIS is the body of a woman who's been
married for 15-20 years and had three children!").

I'm rarely home on a Friday night to watch TV, but I'll miss Medium.
I wont' watch skins, but I don't think I'm their target demographic.

MTV's Skins comes on at 10pm Eastern. Therefore, if you want to keep
your children from watching these types of shows, it is your
responsibility as a parent to monitor their viewing activities and get
them to bed at a reasonable hour. Most TV's have parental controls, as
do television providers to block access to these shows.

why should ANY network drop a show just because a small number of
people hate it?

should one small group of people have the right to decide what other
people watch?



why not do as others suggested... if you don't like it don't watch
it.


Just because you personally dislike a show does not mean someone else
does. THEY ALL are paying customers. And if the show has high
ratings it means enough of them have made a conscious choice.

Should the decisions of other PAYING CUSTOMERS matter less just
because you disagree with their choices?

Yeah, because keeping poor performing programs around because one or
two people complained makes a lot of sense.

The best way to address this problem (and I saw the promos for Skins
too - I was disgusted!) is to speak with your remote control.

DON'T watch the hyped programs. DON'T tell everyone how awful they
are, (thus, piquing their morbid curiosity to watch it) and DON'T buy
from the brands that run ads that sponsor the show.

That is the ONLY way to control what stays on TV and what gets dumped.

Really? Medium? Okay. To each is own.

Allow me to explain something here. CBS is out to make money, as are
all other networks and channels. The fact is that ratings will bring
in advertising, which is how these networks survive.

Like the previous poster said, I really don't see the comparison at
all. Is CBS replacing Skins in the time slot Medium occupied? No.
So what do the two have to do with each other? Nothing. I'm certain
the meeting at CBS did not have someone saying "we better cancel
Medium because of that Skins show on MTV." That doesn't even make
sense. The two aren't even shown on the same night. Even if CBS owns
MTV, Medium getting canceled has nothing to do with Skins. Medium got
canceled because people were not watching it. It also doesn't help
Medium that Patricia A said in an interview she felt the show's
quality had taken a dive. That is your lead star saying the show was
suffering. Why not blame her. Or better yet, do some research and
find out what is replacing Medium before jumping on the "Skins will
ruin society bandwagon."

By the way, you know that it is people like you that keep talking
about how bad Skins is to our society that is only making people so
curious they will watch it. Stop being part of the problem and start
being part of the solution. Just ignore it and it will eventually go
away. If you want to raise a moral objection about anything, talk
that MTV show about sixteen year olds having kids that is prompting
high schools girls to get knocked up in the hopes to get on that show.

I think youve mis-directed your letter. CBS is not airing Skins, MTV
is.

Either way, nobody is forcing you to watch anything, do what i do:
when a program offends me, i go find a different one. I absolutely
detest MSNBC and CNN, but instead of soapboxing it, i find a different
channel./
