The bartender and his friends were definitely out of line, I can understand his frustration but he should not have took it out on customer. Just glad to hear that no violence or loud arguments broke out. I would have most likely been unable to restrain myself to challenging the bartender for being so rude in front of my spouse.

You're lucky you did not hear the kitchen staff lol. Still inappropriate to do that in front of customers though.

Sure the bartender may have been really rude and sure maybe he was ticked because not only you but a few more people had come in past closing time.
However, if you had just accepted that being told of an incorrect closing time was a simple mistake and had moved onto the next restaurant that actually was open...you wouldn't have even had to write this letter.
When you expect places to completely break their rules just because you say so, than you should expect some sort of retaliation towards your self centered actions.
Those people probably worked their tails off all night long and just wanted to go home.
So remember this...be sure to open YOUR doors when someone comes knocking after you have locked up for the evening. This is the only way you'll ever be able to justify your complaint.

Ok, I agree that the bartender should've kept he comment to himself. However, what is up with you thinking that because your husband is a Physician and you have 2 Master's degree makes you better than everyone else?
Master's degrees and Doctorates do not make you any better than the rest of the world.

First off you called, the bartender should be angry and take his infantile frustrations out on whoever told you 10:30pm.
This would be a great scenario for, "What would you do?" I am so sick of people bullying customers who dare make them work an extra 10 minutes past closing time.
Good luck, that jerk should be fired.

"...I simply got up and informed the waitstaff what was going on but apparently by this time the manager who had put us at that table had left for the evening."
I find it hard to believe that even if the one manager was gone there was no other manager there. And since you seemed to be happy with the wait staff seems odd they did not get a manager.
I would bet there is more to the story than the OP has posted.
Finally if you did not get anything from the bar and since bartenders in many cases work mainly for tips you were NOT his boss.

Your letter was fine until you got to the whole academic part. What you said is very berating and condescending to people in general who work at non-degree jobs. Everyone has a starting point in life, and just because you don't have a masters degree doesn't make you less intelligent or lower in superiority to other people! Most people have take these jobs to pay for school expenses in order to get their degrees! I applaud the people who have the most back breaking, berating, minimum wage jobs making 6 bucks an hour, so they can serve the so called "superior" people!

I am glad you didn't let the bartenders bad attitude affect the waitress's tip. Sometimes people take out their negative experience out on the poor waitress.
However, I too am put off by your listing you and your husbands credentials. I have an associate degree and my husband has a high school education, so it would have been ok for the bartender to be rude to us????
I work in a hospital and my husband is a manufacturer's rep and we also are very aware of how important it is to make good impressions on customers, patients and co-workers. That is not something that is exclusive to those fortunate enough to have advanced degrees. I found your comment condescending.

I agree the bartender was being rude and hopefully that will be dealt with.
BUT
it irks me that you think because of your degree's you are a "higher standard" then a "bartender" maybe that "bartender" is working at nights to pay for going to college during the day and if it were not for these "bartenders" you wouldn't have gotten a drink.
Me personally just because I have a degree I don't think myself as "higher standard" then anyone else.
AND
it was nice of them to let you in after they closed.

Oh, so only uneducated bartenders can behave like boors?
Frankly, your complaint was fine until you muddied the waters with the alleged academic degrees and achievements.

She's not referring to all Outback bartenders or even bartenders in general. She's referring to this bartender albeit in a pejorative sense.

"so we hold ourselves to a higher standard of character than I suppose a bartender at The Outback does."
RIGHT THERE she refers not only to BARTENDERS but BARTENDERS AT THE OUTBACK.

Talk about awful customer service! I hope you hear something back soon and that something gets done with that bartender. I have worked as a server for years and I cannot imagine treating my customers that way. My boss would fire anyone who acted that way immediately.
