Not treated like Mother's Day Queen at Red the Steakhouse
Posted Mon May 9, 2011 12:00 pm, by Erika Z. written to Red the Steakhouse, South Beach
As a local South Floridian, we dine in Miami quite often. Mother's Day weekend we usually go to Prime 112, but this year we decided to try Red. To put it mildly, I was not treated like the Mother's Day Queen of the night.
Our waiter was Christopher. He greeted us, asked us if we were here before, and proclaimed we will be having the steak of a lifetime. Never informed us about any specials and treated us as if we were customers at McDonalds. We were a party of five. Our dinner order consisted of: 3 french onion soups (and asked to have the onions strained from one), baked clams,a wedge salad, 2 porter house steaks (medium plus), fillet mignon (medium),1 ribeye on bone, 1 rib eye off boneless, mashed potatoes, spinach and macaroni and cheese. The soups were first to come out. My son noticed his $16 onion soup had onions. My husband alerted our waiter, Christopher who said, he thought it was a joke, and that we do not remove the onions here, then walked away. His indifference, was just the beginning. Next the steaks arrive and the sides, except for the macaroni and cheese which was delayed. My sons medium fillet was very rare, so we asked to cook it more, and one of the porterhouse was also too rare. They returned the porterhouse, which was good enough and the fillet which was still too rare. We couldn't find our waiter so another wait staff came over (whom we later found out was one of the managers). We told her its still rare and not medium as he asked. Her answer was that it is our medium, it comes out that way do to the special angus meat they use. Well the important matter was that we wanted it cooked more no excuses. She wasn't even apologetic for our dissatisfaction. Then the macaroni and cheese came out and it was room temperature and not hot, so that went back as well. The filet was returned to us, as well as the macaroni and cheese, but at this point we just wrapped it to take home. Our check was about $450 and we felt like we were ignored and treated like teenagers in a fine restaurant. It truly was appalling to spend what we thought would be a nice evening, treated with no care what so ever. But we paid it, without any qualms. Upon leaving, my husband felt the need to inform the manager of how unhappy we were taken care of. Unfortunately, she was also very indifferent, not even apologetic, and a little abrasive. What happened to customer service???
I would like Mr. Friedlander and the other owners of this establishment to be aware, of how their staff are treating their patrons. I think a lecture on customer service should be directed toward the staff, before they chase other patrons away as well.

You are ALL missing the point!!! Everyone has different and "odd" preferences when it comes to food preferences and dining. The food was not the issue. What we were displeased with was how there was a lack of courteousness among the majority of the staff.
I don't think being cordial is too much too ask!!! We were cordial and well mannered, are we wrong to expect the same in return???????????????

I suspect the "Queen of Mother's day" was a bit sarcastic, a way to contrast how you were treated. I thought it was pretty funny actually.
And even if anyone else thinks the requests are odd, they are what you all wanted. And should be honored as much as possible.

Just curious, $450.00 for five people isn't much for a good steakhouse, that didn't include wine did it? If so that's a bargain compared to Ruth Chris!
You had every right to expect good service despite the amount of money per entree`. No onions in onion soup isn't an outlandish request, he just wanted onion broth.
I am not overly picky I realize there are different interpretations of medium and unless raw or burnt will eat it. That being said they should have graciously taken it back and cooked it to your liking.
The manager didn't apologize or anything?
Ever see "Waiting"...I never send food back and am extremely nice to those that handle it.

This was an interesting letter and it gave me a really good chuckle, and it also reminded me why I quit being a server/waitress in the first place. Onions in the onion soup...Oh my!!!

i checked out their website. I can't fathom ordering and paying for those expensive cuts of meat and ordering them "medium."
However, I *do* like it when a steakhouse menu includes a guide to ordering steak doneness, so everyone's speaking the same language and expectations are met.

I can't believe you allowed your son to order FRENCH ONION SOUP and then asked for the onions to be strained. I find that to be absolutely ridiculous. Your son needs to grow up. Order something different. What's next, he orders broccoli cheese soup and wants the broccoli picked out?

"I was not treated like the Mother's Day Queen of the night."
Right off the bat, I would say you would be the one with the attitude. Based on the sentence, I feel you expected the staff to be your "servants" for the day.
Over the years, I have learned that steakhouses have different definitions of doneness. In some restaurants, I have learned their medium rare is perfect for me while in others medium is what I have to order. I have seen steak houses defining how medium and medium rare are cooked. Was this done for you or listed on the menu.

1. re: onion soup, what can I say, my husband loves the flavor of onion soup and just hates the pieces of onion. Many restaurants have done this for him. If they would have said it wasn't possible, it would have been fine. Saying I thought you were joking and we dont do that here, is not what you say to a customer. There is a nice way to say things.
2. I did not expect at all to be treated like a queen, but I do expect wait staff to earn their tip, by being courteous and well mannered, just the same as the patrons speak to them, not kiss my feet!! I do believe that a simple no problem, sorry or just a polite way of correcting the issue goes a long way. If the explanations came with kind words, of correcting the issue that is all that we expected.
My complaint with Red, is not the food. It's with their customer relations. At over $80.00 plus gratuity per person, we should not have left feeling like we were treated like children using daddy's money for a fancy night out.
