TALK IS CHEAP - EDWARD DID YOU MEAN WHAT YOU SAID?

Posted Sun July 3, 2011 7:54 pm, by Mark H. written to Costco Companies, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company

Edward, manager of our local Costco told me weeks ago they would be installing video surveillance on the light poles in their parking lot. I'm not sure if Edward meant what he said or not. Maybe he was telling me what I wanted to hear and had no intention of having video surveillance cameras installed. A company is known by its employees. We shopped at Costco today even without security. My wife and children stayed in the vehicle with a loaded 9mm. Of course, since Chris the Costco Tire Department manager told me he always went into Costco with his concealed carry weapon, I assumed it is legal for me as well. Legal or not, I will never shop at Costco without protection. I work for one of the largest employers in Texas and my co-workers told me they were not shopping at Costco any longer. They have all switched over to Sam's Club. Also one co-worker checked the police reports for our local Sam's store about 1 mile from Costco and no vehicle break-ins have been reported. My wife ordered the report for Costco and there have been numerous vehicle break-ins. Sam's Club is doing something correct regarding parking lot security.

Someone made a comment about leaving valuables in a vehicle. If you consider your vehicle registration and proof of insurance a valuable I suggest you carry it on your person at all times. The thieves/rapists that robbed us now know where we live. So you better always take your vehicle paperwork into stores with you, unless you want them to know where you live. They can easily look you up online, then rob and harm your family. I spoke with a local city policeman yesterday and his motorcycle was stolen the day after he bought it. It was never found. So don't leave your motorcycles unattended, unless you don't mind losing it, as well. The local police told me it doesn't matter if the criminals see valuable in a vehicle - they break into anyway to look. Some of my friends are leaving their vehicles unlocked now. We keep our vehicle documents in our backpacks that we keep with us.

Follow through on what your manager says he is going to do and install cameras in the parking lot. Having a security person patrol the parking lots would help, too.

Must be a different world where some of those commenting live that
someone would simply be able to walk into your home and rob it or them
and not be charged with breaking and entering. At the very least it's
burglary, and if you're home at the time it's home invasion and
robbery. Around here it's perfectly legal to shoot to kill if they
enter your home without permission whether the doors are locked or
not. Like the sign says,"Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be
shot again".

It took my wife 6 months to get a steam kettle when she asked for one.
It went through committees, votes, 3 quotes, etc. So I can imagine
what it takes to get cameras in the parking lot of a huge retailer.

I am sure if you send a dozen more of these it should get it done in
about the same time if you didnt.

Honestly what will cameras do? Give police the grainy outline of
someone stealing your car?

Then again if you bugged Edward in person as much as you are bugging
him electronically maybe he just lied to you to get you to leave him
alone.

Stupid question: if this particular Costco is soooooooo unsafe, then
why do you keep shopping there?

You do realize that if you leave your car unlocked and some one
hotwires and steals it some insurance policies won't cover that right?
Also, if the door is unlocked it is no longer considered "breaking
into" the car if they decide to steal something. Much like if you
leave your front door unlocked and somebody enters your house. It is
no longer "breaking and entering" because they didn't have to "break
in". Besides that alot of criminals that will break into a car just to
look won't even try the door to see if it is open.

The only thing I dislike about the document is that you can't use the
'search' function to find phrases. But it pretty much points out all
the rules etc... even what the law considers to be justifications for
using deadly force.

Why must he defend the car? by Nate. Wed July 6, 2011 @ 11:51 PM

in the car with someone parent or otherwise just in case someone comes
near the car so you can wave a LOADED GUN at them might not be
considered healthy for children to witness. For christsake - if they
want to be this way and stay with their car and wave guns at people so
be it - but why should the children be subject to that? And what if
they actually fire the gun? That would wonderful for the children - a
gun fired in close range in an inclosed space - and that what if that
person has a gun? God, the possibilities for horror are endless.

with children witnessing a perfectly legal form of self protection.
When you say "waving" waving a gun, it makes it sound like she is
going to be horribly careless. The children may not have even known
that their mom was armed! If the weapon is well concealed, they might
not have known any difference. It is proven that displaying a gun is
enough to prevent most attempted burglaries or robberies. There are
what-ifs abound, but if the OP and his wife are responsible gun
owners, then I see no problem with protecting your property with a
gun. Doing so is your fundamental right.

This happend in SA? And there are 2 Costco's in SA. The one on UTSA
Blvd and one out on 1604 - neither one in an area I would consider
high crime. If you want security cam's try the Sam's on I10 @
Dezavala...they have them. Never noticed that Costco's didnt have
security cam's...never really thought about it however.

Please PLEASE leave that poor manager alone already. He has NOTHING to
do with it at this point. If this is SO important to you why don't
you front the money to get the cameras installed? or shop somewhere
else.

Costo is NOT responsible for crime in the state of texas. I don't even
know why a bike being stolen someplace else factors into this letter.

Does it stink getting robbed? Yes. But sometimes you just have to get
over things, not teach your child to sit in the car with a GUN (yes, I
know the wife was there as well). But seriously, it seems as though
this event has caused you a great deal of upset. You might need to
look into a healthy way to deal with those feelings.

Why would you ASSUME ANYTHING about gun laws?

A lot of factors could play into why Sam's Club has not had break ins
on their property, and one of those things could just be that they
haven't been targeted yet, plain and simple. What will you do if
something bad happens in that parking lot? A fight. A break in. Purse
snatcher. Dog locked in the car.

My car was broken into and things were taken out of it - this happened
in MY OWN DRIVEWAY WHILE I WAS SLEEPING. Sometimes you just have to
say - bad things happen and move on.

Why would you ASSUME ANYTHING about gun laws? - especially in Texas where they make the laws rather obvious by PepperElf Tue July 5, 2011 @ 3:37 PM

Why on earth do you consider proof of insurance to be a valuable item?
Keep it in your billfold, then.

Seriously, if you feel so unsafe shopping there that you need to pack
a gun, you need to go elsewhere. This Edward person told you the
cameras would be installed. In the corporate world, this will still
take some time. Usually a "request for proposal" needs to go out to
various vendors. Bidders are given a certain time period to respond
and then those bids are reviewed by the company.

I used to send out RFP's for bids on telecom equipment. The whole
process could take months before the work was actually started.

I don't understand the tangent you went off on about motorcycle theft.
My husband and I are motorcycle enthusiasts. Motorcycles can be
stolen anywhere. Several members of my husband's club had bikes
stolen from right in front of their clubhouse during a meeting! It
takes a brazen thief to steal bikes but a biker club during their
meeting with about 50 bikers less than 100' away!

So wait.... does this mean you KNOW it's not legal for you to carry,
but you carry anyway?

I am a legal gun owner. I will soon be a resident in this state long
enough to apply for a CCW and I will.

Just having a loaded gun does not magically make you safe. You have
to know how to fire it properly, how to maintain it. And how to draw
it from concealment AND shoot your target without snagging it on your
cloths.

Before you carry, learn the local laws.
In all honesty, you CAN be arrested - or worse, shot and killed by an
officer of the law - for illegally carrying.

and for the love of sanity please don't tell me you got a Glock or a
High-point.
Glocks are NOTORIOUS for failure - including fatal failure.

people keep going back, even though it's (apparently) very dangerous.

Being that Costco is the kind of store you don't just pop in to grab a
gallon of milk, I hope you were joking about leaving your wife and
kids in the car while you shopped. It was 104 in San Antonio. Other
than tomatoes, no living thing should be left trapped in a vehicle at
those sort of temperatures.
