Shady Post Void

I received 3 infant sleep sacks as a gift in the mail from target.com. They were not the kind I wanted so I went to the store to return them the next morning. I was given a gift card for the return in the amount of 29.95 because I had no gift receipt.
We went shopping with the gift card and purchased 84.62 worth of baby items and used our gift card. We paid the difference of 54.67 with our credit card. When I got home I realized the return should have been for 63.57 instead of 29.95 and since that is about a $30 difference, I decided it was definitely worth printing out a gift receipt and going back.
Went back to the store the same day. The manager post voided the transaction where we purchased our items for 84.62. She re-did the return and put it on a gift card and then rung up the items from the transaction to where we purchased the items using the gift card with the proper amount and we paid the difference of 21.05. It is now 5 days later and the post voided amount of 84.62 has not been credited to our account.
So, to make a long story short, we have essentially paid for the same items twice and target owes us 84.62.
give us our 84.62 back NOT in the form of a gift card, because I will not be spending another dime in that store for as long as I live. I want nothing more than what I am owed.

Well, first off, congrats on getting the "full value" of the items. When no receipts are available, stores give the lowest price over the last 30-60 days.
As far as post voids, well, as many have said it can take time to show up. If you access your information online, you can see it the minute it gets posted. Whether it takes longer to post is a different matter. At least you can see it is coming.
It can take 4-10 days to show as posting. What you don't know, and has not been stated, that I saw, it can actually take up to two billing cycles to see it on a bill.
The reason for this is because if the transaction takes place right at the time your bill is getting processed, you won't see it on the first bill.
Sadly, they are fast to take our money; but, it seems to take much longer to give it back. (That is because of the time it takes to process the refund. Seems crazy, and it is, but, that's why. Making a purchase is much more simple. Consider it like this: It takes longer to clean up a mess than it takes to make one).

Wow, that's a big difference -- over $30 -- of a mistake to be made. At least the store agreed with you and rectified it. Um, sort of rectified it. Almost.

that a credit / debit card refund is NOT instant.
and that it depends on your FINANCIAL INSTITUTION rather than the store on how fast your money gets credited back to your account.
You need to contact your credit card and ask them why the money hasn't been returned.

For whatever reason, Target's returns tend to take 7-10 BUSINESS days to process and show up back in your account. You don't mention if 5 days is from the date you did the return or 5 business days. I have worked for them and been a customer for years and this has always been the case.
In truth, it can take up to 30 days to post back to your account depending on your own bank as well and they are perfectly within their right to take this long to process. You legitimately agreed to the initial purchase and now they have to "un-do" it.

I am checking constantly because otherwise we only have $22 in our bank account until monday. It's hard to wait patiently for nothing to happen when you are 8 months pregnant and have no money. My husband works very hard for our money as he has just returned from Afghanistan. He has the day off monday so we will be going to the bank to fill out one of those written forms. Also, I will add again that we were told this would only take about 24 hours and no longer than 3 days to be refunded to us. both by the target manager and also by the bank.

When a post void is done, a refund is not put through to your account.
When you do a credit card transaction, the system electronically places an authorization which guarantees your funds for the merchant. The merchant then has to close out the transaction and actually charge your card for the charges to post. Usually this happens overnight, after the close of the business day when the systems reset.
When a post void is done, the transaction is essentially cleared out of Target's system as if it never happened, but this does not affect the system of your financial institution. Once an authorization is placed, it either must be posted as a charge, or left to expire. Depending upon your financial institutions policies, as mentioned, it can take 7-10 business days.
Your money will NOT appear as a credit, the pending charges will simply disappear.
