I wonder why the cashier wouldn't just hand you the bill. Why wrap it in a receipt and put it in the bag? I've gotten cash back at stores a number of times, and they just hand it to you just like they hand back change. They don't put it in the bag.

I have to agree with other posters. CHECK YOUR RECEIPT and make sure you asked for the $20.00.
I always get cash back from a multitude of merchants, and I've never had a problem. They always ask if I want cash back just in case I've made a mistake.
YOU are the one that needs to pay attention to what you want your transaction total to be, and to make sure that you are keying your intention correctly into the merchants keypad.
After working in the retail environment for so many years I know that a lot of customers don't really pay attention to what they are keying into the keypad. They just want to get there merchandise and get out.

Does your receipt show that you overpaid by $20?
Regardless of you hitting the button or not, your receipt will show if you over paid by that amount or not.

You should have called police right then and there, and the manager is WRONG, they have every right to check the employee AND her belongings. Retail stores do this ALL THE TIME to their employees.

I would suspect that like other people posted, the transaction didn't go through, but the cashier did say she gave you the money. I would follow up with the other manager.
However, I'd probably try to stay away from comments like "MORE IMPORTANT MAKE SURE IT IS NOT ONE OF YOUR POLICIES FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES TO STEAL FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS". Of course it's not a policy, and comments like that can just make people feel defensive.
And of course they can't search the cashier for money. There would be no way to prove it wasn't there all along.
