Charged Too Much At Animal Hospital
Posted Wed April 4, 2012 12:00 pm, by Karen C. written to Animal Hospital of West Port Saint Lucie
Four weeks ago I took my dog to the vet. We went to Animal Hospital of West Port Saint Lucie . My dog was given a couple of shots and pills. The bill was high at $174 (this was with a coupon for a free visit)! He did not get better. I called for a recheck appointment and was told the visit would be $25. I went in and he looked at my dog and said, "You better hope this is a flea allergy". He wanted to put him back on the same treatment that didn't work last time. I said I thought we should try something else. He said, "I'll do an anal gland check and try some different pills". I asked if they were expensive, being careful to inquire ahead of time about the price. He said, "no". He left the room with my dog and came back with a bottle of pills. I went to pay for the pills, and the girl behind the counter hands me a bill for $111.39. I asked what it was for and she said, "The visit is $25, the pills are $23.50, the anal check was $12.95, the shots were $22.50 each x 2, and waste disposal is $4.94". I asked, "What shots?" She said the same shots he gave last time. I said I wasn't told ahead of time about the charges. The girl went to talk to the vet and came out saying, “He told you he was going to do what he did last time”. I asked to speak to him. He never came out to discuss it with me. He told the girl to take the pills back and charge me $25 for the visit and give me my records, basically kicking me out for questioning the charges! He wouldn't sell me the pills and couldn't care less about my dog. I have never been to such an unprofessional vet in my life. I just wanted to warn others that if you should choose this vet, be sure to ask up front about the charges! He’s strictly in it for your money!
Go out of business!

We took our new puppy here for a check and while checking her posture he pushed her down on her belly all four paws our and pushed on her hips making her yelp. Ever since then she yelps whenever touched the wrong way in that area. We have moved to the office on PSL Blvd by the pet store. Actually we thought the two offices were affiliated. PSL west told us they were. They were not. I hope your dog is doing better.

You're absolutely correct. People are more likely to question vet charges than people doctor charges because they most likely are paying for the vet charges out of their own pocket. It has often been said if people paid their healthcare costs out of their own pocket, they'd be much more likely to question them and look for the best value which introduces an element of competition which is currently lacking in today's healthcare process.

I've had problems in the past with vets doing the same type of thing as well.
We actually started going to banfield (usually found inside petsmart) about a year ago and they are WONDERFUL. They give an invoice before any treatment is done and are always really upfront with treatment options and in most cases offer several solutions.
I hope you pet gets better.

We have had problems with vets in that area. Try the one on Jensen Beach Blvd. (east of savanah rd.) They are very good and compassionate. Esp. with the flea thing.

Yeah, I switched vets too because my former one was starting to be more about the money and less about the animals.
Even at the new one, I ask for a printed invoice of whatever treatment they are going to do on my pets BEFORE agreeing and I sign it to authorize. I don't want to be surprised by any treatments 'snuck in' without my okay.

Yup, he sounds like a lousy vet. I suggest you speak with other pet owners and get a recommendation/referral from someone you can trust.
Honestly, PLEASE PLEASE report this guy to the appropriate licensing agency for this state. Hopefully, others have complained as well and some action should be taken.
Signed,
Someone whose cat needed emergency surgery during a routine checkup in February, and I spent $1200 in two weeks to fix her. And it was worth every penny, because I trust and love my veterinarian.
