Maytag refrigerator

Posted Tue April 24, 2012 12:00 pm, by Mardelle L. written to Maytag

My grand daughter teaches school in the Atlanta area. Fourteen months ago she leased a lovely home at Duluth near Johns Creek. The appliances went with the house and all were new including a Maytag refrigerator. In less than one year the refrigerator had broken down twice and in the additional two months it did it again. Each time she lost a great deal of food and the frustration has been unbelievable. Of course she first talked with the property owners and they in turn went to Maytag. Each time she was told that this particular model of refrigerator had been a real lemon!! They asked for a replacement but to no avail. NOW this is the third breakdown and they say that it is now 14 months old so the warrenty is out!!!She and the owners have contacted everyone to try to get help but all they get is very rude customer service. Someone finally agreed to replace the compressor at no charge but this was three weeks ago and the compressor was finally sent yesterday!!!I can't believe that the MayTag company has degenerated to this level! I,personally, have owned several Maytag appliances and they were all great. In fact I used a washer and dryer 18 years and they were still going. What's happened? She says that she will be afraid to put her groceries into this fridge ever again. It has already cost her several hundred dollars in food loss.Don't you think that she deserves a replacement? I really have confidence in the Maytag Co. and I do believe that you will stand by your products. Please don't prove me wrong.

Replace this refigerator. Its pretty rough when even the repairmen tells one that this model is a real lemon!!

How do you know the previous owners didn't abuse the heck out of the
fridge? You took ownership of an appliance that you don't know
anything about.

She got it free with the house, just go out and buy a new one. Its
what she would have had to do anyway.

or did it just come with the house from a previous owner/tenant?

Do you know how old all the appliances actually are? You say she has
been in the house for over a year, so even if they were brand new when
she moved in, they are actually out of warranty (she didn't opt to
extend them when she began having difficulty?). Did she report the
previous failures or just have them fixed herself?

No matter how much of a "lemon" the fridge was, just like a car, only
the original owner can typically claim under lemon laws. There isn't
much recourse and even though it might seem unfair, appliances do
break down and it is not the responsibility of the manufacturer to
replace an old refrigerator that your granddaughter does not want to
assume the cost of replacing herself.
