Are there any cellular companies out there that offer less than a
2-year service agreement without going to pre-paid?

Did you read the agreement before you signed it?

Wouldn't a full two year contract be from February 2012 to February
2014, if you joined in February of this year?

So many questions.

"october of next year" - I think that's the "early upgrade" option by PepperElf Tue May 1, 2012 @ 2:35 PM

never had to worry about upgrading cos... you don't get free phones
to begin with.

pay full price for the phone and then a reasonable rate for service.
plus calls to other SB J users was free from 2am to 9pm (yes 19 hours
a day), texts to other SB J users were free 247.

which brings up another issue. breaking contracts. pretty easy cos
it's a monthly contract. so once you say "ok i'm done!" you have one
final monthly bill and then you're off the hook.

the thing is... americans DO have that option. The problem is... no
one really wants to pay full price for a phone to get it.

IMO people are too accustomed to thinking they're entitled to free
stuff all the time.

How does the iPhone hurt Sprint? Its a great phone, and from what I
have read, it actually has been helping the company greatly.

You can wish in one hand and poop in the other, which do you think you
will up first?

1) Cell phone pricing history.

Back when contracts were for 1 year the free phones were usually $200
or less.

Phones now cost 300-600 easily. So you're not going to get it for
free just for signing up for a 1-year plan.

2) No one is really stopping you from upgrading. You can upgrade any
time you want. Just not for free.
