Why do you think it is good advertisement to make women look STUPID? Your Mother and Daughter ad sucks.
I personally would never do business with a company that makes women look like idiots.

pull it

I am not so insecure as a woman that this ad would bother me. It's
just an over exaggeration of a life-changing event.

This is what my dear departed father used to do when a commercial came
on that he didn't like: hit the mute button.

OH Sweet Jesus is it the one where they're crying? Yes pull that one
it's like nails on a chalkboard. I don't care who buys, sells,
whatever just get rid of it.

Most advertising makes all adults (and children) look like complete
fools. I haven't seen an intelligent commercial for years. (and
probably never will).

for AT&T wireless service with the clueless dad and the pre-teen
daughter who has all the answers (invisible cable). Heads up
advertisers - the ADULTS are the ones doing the actual buying - if you
make them look dumb you will alienate them.

Maybe 20 years ago a teenager would know more about technology than a
30-something dad, but in 2010 that dad has grown up with computers and
uses them at work, most likely. He is not likely to be stupid and
clueless like someone's 85-year-old grandfather.

How does it make women look stupid? Maybe the two characters in the
ad but why are you projecting that on all women?

It's easy to make generalizations as the LW did, and as I did as well.
I guess my issue re: men being made to look stupid is, I've noticed
what seems to be a pattern, but that's not really the case with this
commercial, which very likely could be a stand-alone thing, not part
of an ongoing similar ad cmpaign.

I agree, it's AWFUL and ANNOYING.

Annoying as hell.

However: Typically, if someone is made to look stupid/clueless in a
TV commercial, it's a man -- more specifically, a husband. This used
to be how women were portrayed in TV commercials (I've seen some
doozies from the '50s and '60s that make us all look like idiots who
can't clean a house without a man telling us which product to use).

But now that women have fought against that -- publicly -- now
advertisers seem to think that it's okay to make men look dumb.

There's one for retirement planning now, and it shows several husbands
talking to their wives, all the husbands are scared and worried, and
their wives are calm and have all the answers. It's a bit offensive,
really, to break things down along gender that way.

Women's groups spoke up and got advertisers to change their ways in
how they portray women -- that doesn't mean it's okay to make men look
stupid as a group.

I assume you mean the crying ad, how does that make them look stupid?

My mother cried when my sister moved out, she cried when I moved out.
Seems to me its accurate.
