I have been a Target customer for over 20 yrs. I spend approximately spend $2000.00 yr with your company and I am a stock holder.
I am sure you all have seen the commercial with Ellen DeGeneres and JCP. I felt exactly like this. I purchased over $100.00 worth of items today, when I got home (over an hour away)I realized a purchased the wrong dress size. Immediately I jumped in my car and drove (over an hour again)back to the store. I had purchased a maxi dress to wear to an event tonight, so time was of the essence. I did not have my receipt, nor my license due to rushing to get back to the store. The cashier had told me your policy, I asked to speak to a manager. "You are speaking with the manager" he replied with arrogance. I explained my situation, still no options or apologies. The cashier recognized me, and I asked for the manager to look at her tape.(I could recite everything that I had purchased) "NO that is not our policy"
I would understand if they were busy, however, there were maybe 10 cars in the parking lot, and not 1 person at checkouts. NO is apart of the TARGET way? What happen to CUSTOMER SERVICE? What happen to "what can we HELP you with?
Needless to say, I am returning everything purchased, never to step foot in Target again. In all of this frustration I will be selling my stock, to reinvest in a company that prides itself on customer service.
Hopefully Target will take another look at their policies and procedures, to reflect your customers. After all, aren't the customer that pays your paycheck? Hmmm....
Hopefully Target will take another look at their policies and procedures, to reflect your customers options.
In our country's financial crisis, I really don't feel that anyone can afford to lose a customer. Customers = paycheck! Hmmm...something to think about.

If you had just purchased the dress, where was your purse/wallet/etc which usually has your ID in it? And where was the receipt? Who throws a receipt away the very second you buy something? WOuldn't it still be in the bag you brought the dress home in?
And you can SAY you're a stockholder, but without ID you cannot PROVE you are who you say you are. Not that that should make any difference anyway. Being a stockholder doesn't make you special.

I'm not a big fan of Target return policy but it is VERY straight forward and clearly posted. They do make exceptions sometimes if the deem it nessecary (I've had it happen) but I don't see how it really was in this case. How do you walk in a store with something from that store and no reciept? What if security had stopped you and accused you of stealing? You had ZERO proof that you weren't.

Be glad a cop didn't stop you or you'd have larger issues than the refusal of a refund. Driving without a license = really expensive ticket. Hmmm... something to think about.

No receipt, no ID = no refund. That's the policy at every store I've ever dealt with.

I agree that the OP dropped the ball here in regaard to not taking the receipt for the dress she had JUST purchased. You didn't take your purse? Isn't that where your license normally is? And how did you pay for your items? Unless it was cash even the receipt may not help - the refund would go back to the card you used.
As far as driving without a license - that is entirely different than not having your license physically available. Driving without means you do not HAVE one, period. If you don't have it on you and get pulled over, give the cop your name and address. They can look it up right in their car. And since I think all states now have photo licenses it's not like you can give someone else's name. It's a good idea to always have your license on you when you are driving, but it's not critical.

without your license?
I'm sorry, I have a hard time feeling bad for anyone who shows up for a return and doesn't even have any identification on them. No license? No credit card? NOTHING???
Target requires a receipt, but their system is BY FAR the easiest to use if you do lose or forget it. They couldn't possibly kid-proof it anymore than they have!

Is this really so difficult?
No receipt = no return. Period. The end. You don't get an exception because you're in a hurry and forgot your receipt.

You drove for two hours with no ID/driver's license? that seems silly. No ID? What if you were in an accident? No money? What if something happened?
NO RECEIPT? What the hell were you thinking?
Your hurry is not Target's problem.
I am completely on Target's side on this. People returning stolen goods without receipts is the reason we now have stricter return policies (and Target's is rather generous -- 90 days). Get over yourself and go shop at Walmart.

Hopefully target will agree with the employee
Regardless of what reasons you bring up - most major retailers will NOT refund a purchase or conduct an exchange if you don't bother bringing in your ID or receipt.
It doesn't matter if you don't like it. It doesn't matter if you feel you didn't have time to get your driver's license before driving in your car.
What matters is that this is not their fault and that they did nothing wrong in telling you "No"

I see the op said "Customers = paycheck!"
I wonder if that line would work on the cops too. Cos cops always drop tickets when people say "I pay your wages" right?
