Part of an investigation is NOT physically searching with her. If she chooses to do that, it's HER option (although, if it's truly stolen, what good is searching going to do?)

Once the things were stolen, there weren't much that could be done.

I had a friend have $60 stolen out of her wallet that was in her purse sitting less than 2 feet away from her for only a few minutes at a comedy club the other night. They took the cash, nothing else, put the wallet back in the purse and put her purse back next to her. She didn't even notice until we left and headed out for drinks later.
Some people really are that good. I doubt the lady who stole from you was that good though since she called you...
Be more careful with your things. It's a lesson learned

It's not the cruise line's job to watch them for you. Whenever you travel, you need to take due caution with your property.
Did you file a police report and press charges against the thief?

The only way a purse/bag can be "thief proof" is if it's made out of steal and bolted closed, and that only stops someone from getting into the purse, not from stealing it. LOL! You spent money on a "thief proof purse" that was stolen. LOL!

Carnival owes you nothing. You - and only you - are responsible for safeguarding your property.

Your grandkids are secretly glad they don't have to sit through 8gb of vacation photos, though. Maybe it was an inside job.

why is it someone else's responsibility to look out for your things?
this is why establishments have signs stating that they are not responsible for valuables that you leave unattended.
only YOU can prevent this

I'm not really sure what the cruise line could have done differently to protect you from your own negligence, and I'm pretty sure they don't owe you a free cruise becauase you decided to leave your camera lying around.
If you know who stole the phone, call the police, not the cruise line.

Sounds like someone was watching you. They saw that you have a tendency to sit your bag down and not pay attention to it and was waiting for you to do it again, and when you did, they snatched it. I guess your theft proof purse wasn't so theft proof.
