OP's comments:
"I was disabled and completely out of it..."
"I was unable to speak so I was able to send an email to the corporate
office...."
Maybe it's me but those seem like completely opposite statements. I mean I've never been able to write emails while unconscious so... if I'm conscious enough to write an email then I'm conscious enough to ask someone (even pen and paper) to call for me too if I can't use my mouth.

I see the op keeps saying "inability to speak".
Mute people deal with this every day. They use text messages and relay services, or even pen & paper to pass messages to a hearing person.
Cos they know that "i can't speak" doesn't mean "i don't have to pay bills"

Was there someone else who could have handled the problem for you?

About disabling your code, as if you could somehow get on the property you could then access your unit. For example, if you knew someone else there. And actually, I have to wonder if everyone has the same code, so that disabling it for you would mean changing it for everyone else.
But the second lock seems reasonable to me.
Regardless, it does sound like they were following the policies you agreed to when you rented.

my code iirc is my personal number **** followed by my unit number ***
or vice versa, i forget.
Although disabling code or not, if someone else is available to access the unit that someone can also contact the company and make payment.
if it's like mine then there IS staff available during working hours. and if not you can always call the company up

where did they break the contract?
they didn't.
it's your responsibility to make arrangements for your own payments. it's not their job to hunt you down for money.

Nope. You could have contacted them, or someone else could have contacted them. How were they to know you were incapacitated? You knew the consequences of not paying. It's not very fair to blamethem when this is all on you.
