refused water

Was refused a water cup to go with my order. When asked to get one, the guy says company policy. I am going to research if this is even legal with state and local laws now.

Provide a water cup for free. It'll cost you no more than 5cents and gives you a happy customer. Doesn't seem to hard to figure that out.

Perhaps they no longer give out free cups because they cannot be sure
that the people aren't filling them with soda and juice anyway,
thereby causing a monetary loss. As far as I know, no store has to
give you anything, water or no. You could have purchased a drink or
carried your own water bottle with you, especially with the weather
we've been having.

I doubt the cup costs the company a nickel. But, even if it does --
and understanding that the profit margin in most restaurants is low --
the restaurant is not only losing this one customer, it's probably
losing a number of customers because this customer is telling all
his/her friends about the bad experience. Conversely, the place could
be getting all sorts of new customers if the original one had been
able to say what wonderful service s/he'd gotten there and how nicely
s/he'd been treated.

cup cost and friends/family boycott myth by PepperElf Tue June 26, 2012 @ 3:11 PM

Sorry to burst your bubble on this but they DON'T have to give you a
free cup.

In my home state they legally have to let you have free water. But
they don't have to give you a free cup to go with it.

So, as long as there's a water fountain they're good to go. There's
your free water.

It would not make sense to me that a fast food place, such as Subway,
would not make sure that charging for water is not violating some sort
of state & local law.

Because IF Subway did charge for water, AND it WAS illegal, they would
be faced with a fine.

They would then have to pay the fine & make up for the lost money
someway...probably by raising the cost of the food.

I would think that Subway would NOT want to pay that fine.

I've never heard of a law that requires a restaurant to give free
water upon request, however I would be interested to hear what your
research turns up.

Yes, most places offer them as a courtesy, however if you disagree
with their policy, go elsewhere.

illegal to refuse to give a free cup of water? That's rich!

Since companies today are charging $0.75 - $1 for AIR to fill up your
tires, I don't think there's any expectation of ANYTHING being free
anymore!

It's not the water, it's the cup. I work in a GROCERY store and the
deli charges for the cup. If you bring in your own you can fill up all
you want for free.

If the business isn't getting them for free, why should the customer.
I did say BUSINESS right?

and some places charge for cups to prevent soda theft by PepperElf Fri June 22, 2012 @ 12:30 AM

of refusing a customer a glass of water in a restaurant.
I know if this happened to me, I would make an issue of it. BTW, I'm
guessing, but the cost of a paper cup, is probably closer to one cent
when purchased in bulk.

If this is the company policy, it's wrong.

most water cups are different from soda cups by RedheadwGlasses Wed June 20, 2012 @ 1:53 PM

most places charge for a cup, it costs them money so it should cost
you. Why should they eat the nickle? If they give out 10 cups a day
its like 170 a year

Also whats to stop you from filling it with something other than
water.
