RE: Toxicity of Xylitol to dogs

Dear Sirs,
Two weeks ago we nearly lost our two year old boxer after he consumed several pieces of Ice Cube bubble gum I had on my desk. This is a horrifying experience no owner or dog should ever have to go through. After consuming Xylitol it only takes about 45 minutes for the lethargy, disorientation and then seizures to begin. This was on a Sunday morning and our emergency Vet clinic is 30 miles away. I watched him convulse, foam at the mouth and really thought he was going to die before we could get him help. Nearly 24 hours in the emergency clinic and 48 hours of waiting to find out if he was in liver failure was one of the scareist times in my life. I have never felt so helpless. We were lucky. A very expensive vet bill we now have a Xylitol survivor. I had no idea Xylitol is so very toxic to dogs and apparently not many people do. I would like to see some kind of new labeling informing people of the dangers Xylitol presents to dogs. Not many company's would even consider this for fear of losing sales but I truly believe that doing so would increase sales dramatically as it would show consumers that not only are you aware of the danger to dogs ,you want the people buying your product to be informed so they can take appropriate measures to protect their dogs.
Thank you,

Good to know. Xylitol is in products other than just gum:

3grams is enough to kill a 65 pound dog? Yikes!

How many other warnings do we need to ad? Is it harmful to gerbils?
cats? deer? mice?

I think you know dogs shouldnt eat gum, thats enough. I seriously
doubt people are funning around giving their dogs gum.

Did you know drano is bad for dogs as well? does that need to be on
the label?

it needs that much room to list all of the warnings.

I had no idea dogs reacted to this. Since I am going to the vet this
morning, I am going to ask about it. Am glad your dog recovered,
though I am sure it was very scary.
