Why E???

I cannot believe you took E! out of my channel lineup. Just because I only have extended basic cable does not mean you should take away one of the most basic of all cable channels.
This just adds to the ever-growing list as to why I really, really hate your company. I so wish I didn't live in a city where you are the only choice in cable provider because you completely suck. I refuse to get anything other than basic cable because I have TiVo, so I shouldn't be penalized for that.
Put E! back into my channel lineup.

Why? Because the contract price wasn't good enough probably.
That's how the system works. They have to pay the network X amount of dollars in order to carry the network. They probably didn't find the price worth it - either because of the cost, or because they didn't have enough viewers to justify the purchase of another year.
Why didn't they just keep it for you?
Well that's the problem. In order to keep basic cable costs down they can't spend money on network contracts that aren't lucrative enough for them.
That's why some channels you associate with "basic" may end up going to "premiere"... because they're not going to throw money away.
So what do you do? You can always go to http://www.eonline.com/ and watch it there, perhaps even pay them directly for the programming you want.
Personally I somewhat gave up on the whole cable/satellite tv thing entirely. If I really want to watch something I just get the DVD or watch it online.

So here's the basic problem. Charter sucks. In a big way. They really don't care about customers, and their services are far below any of the competition. I've had multiple carriers in my travels (Cox, Comcast, Dish, TW) and I currently have to use Charter because they have a monopoly in my town. And they are, by far, the worst company I've dealt with. All of their agents are really, really nice, but they just don't ever fix the problems.

You get the local over the air stations, which may not come in and the lower tier cable stuff. That includes E!, the History Channel, Discovery, etc. I personally couldn't care less if I ever saw E! or any of the shopping channels again, but someone must like them.

The local network told the cable provider that they had to pay $X (not sure how much) if they wanted to continue broadcasting the channel.
The cable network said "no" because people got to watch it for free over the air. But the local network didn't back down.
So the cutoff day came and the cable network had to stop broadcasting the local channel. which meant the cable network couldn't play the football games... they lost enough customers over it that they reopened negotiations with the local network and pretty much gave in.
