"Merry Christmas" in TV Spot

Posted Sun December 2, 2007 4:20 pm, by George G. written to JCPenney Company, Inc.

To whom it may concern,
I recently viewed a new television advertisement for JCPenny. The spot featured a little girl building a secret project in her back yard. The project was a rocket ship that would take her to the North Pole. After she lifts off, the camera pans out and across the screen it reads "MERRY CHRISTMAS". Seeing those two words brought an extra spot of joy to my heart. No generic "happy holidays" or "seasons greetings", but a full on "Merry Christmas". I was thrilled. So bravo to whom ever made the decision to put "Christmas" back into Christmas for JCPenny. I intend to take my business there more often with positive moves like that being made. Thank you again and Merry Christmas to you and your staff.

Sincerely,
George G.

It's amazing that more than 1/2 of the stores some have complained
that they lack "Christmas" spirit are showing Christmas in their adds
for all to see.
(Kohl's, Target, Block Buster, etc)

I keep scratching my head in wonder as to what these people really
want.

I always thought that "Happy Holidays" was something said during the
month of December and that "Merry Christmas" was reserved for the
actual Christmas Day. Maybe im wrong, Im not all that christian to
begin with. Because of this thinking though, I tell all my customers
Happy Holidays. Because I want them to be happy on days that arent
Christmas too.

I whole heartedly agree with you- very nice to see! Although a Merry
Christmas, and Happy Holidays is good as well... includes everyone.

In a time where our elementary school won't allow a Christmas Tree
because of 2 families complaint, it's very refreshing to see things
like this.

We were allowed to put up a "Giving Tree" which is a single birch tree
in a pot with all the branches stripped off- what a load of PC crap!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I LOVE that commercial! Silly me, I thought Happy Holidays or Season's
Greetings was a way for the retailers to capture all markets:
Christmas, Chanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festvus, etc

Next thing you know, we'll be shooting our kids for naming the class
turtle Moses!

Oh God. All you "war on Christmas" people just need to get over
yourselves already.

There is no freaking war on Christmas. You can say Merry Christmas to
whomever the hell you want.

Saying "Merry Christmas" instead of Happy Holidays doesn't make you
any more special or Christian or good. Do you really think that's
what Jesus is concerned about? People who say Happy Holidays?

I can just imagine...

"Welcome to Heaven and thank you for devoting your life to working
with the poor, but I see that you used the phrase 'Happy Holidays' on
December 4, 2007 so it's straight to Hell for you. Sorry!"

WHO CARES?!

People who've been brainwashed by Bill O'Lielly and his ilk to believe
that anyone who doesn't say CHRISTmas is some godless liberal out to
destroy America.

I am so SICK of this trumped up, stupid CHRISTmas controversy. It
ruins the whole damn holiday season. There - I said Holiday, so shoot
me.

I think some of you are a bit jaded by the other religious based
letters.

This one does not mention religion. The OP simply said "So bravo to
whom ever made the decision to put "Christmas" back into Christmas for
JCPenny."

Now, if we are to believe the replies on other letters then we are to
assume that not every person who celebrates Christmas is Christian.
Therefore, we can not ASSUME that this letter has anything to do with
religion as some of you seem to think.

This is a good letter. They dont demand anything from anyone. The
commercial IS a good one. I love it! Its very cute and not like your
typical Christmas commercials. The fact alone that its a little girl
building a rocket ship endears it to me.

I can understand jumping on things a letter writer says...but jumping
on them for things they DONT say? Thats really not nice. Not very
Christian of yall. LOL!

Don't forget: The "JC" in "JCPenny" is for "Jesus Christ."

He founded the company. Back then, he was selling t-shirts after the
Sermon on the Mount.

After the Resurection, there were the bumper stickers that said "Jesus
died for my sins, and all I got with this lousy bumper sticker."

Oh, wait. None of this is true. That'd be offensive to someone imply
that Jesus Christ had anything to do with JCPenny.

Oh, wait. George G. did that. Never mind.

I'm confused. What does a rocket ship flying to the North Pole have to
do with Jesus being born? Is Jesus on the rocket ship? Who put him in
the rocket ship? Why is he going to the North Pole? Is that where his
Fortress of Solitude is located?

Wait, I just figured it out. J.C.Penney is mistaking Jesus with
Superman.

Ooooo.... I have an idea...

I think stores should have different sales for different people. They
can advertise "Merry Christmas" for all the fake Christians that think
that the birth of Jesus has something to do with shopping.

And they can advertise "Happy Hanukkah" for all the fake Jews who
think that the miracle had more to do with BUYING an oil lamp than it
staying lit for 8 days.

And so on.

That's so sweet! A rocket ship to the north pole? Shouldn't it's GPS
be set to Bethlehem if this is their true intent?

Since Jesus was clearly Jewish, It may have pleased him more if it
said "Happy Holidays" since that phrase would also cover His religious
beliefs as well as the one in His honor.

Read: Thanks for acknowledging my religion because I am so insecure
that in order to feel validated, I have to see that MY religion is
mentioned.

Tolerance. Look it up. Apply it to your life.

That is all.
