What Can You Do for Us as President, John McCain?

Posted Fri September 19, 2008 12:00 pm, by doris l. written to John McCain, US Senate

Write a Letter to this Company

In the past 4 years, my brother who is 49, my sister who is 55, my sister-in-law who is 52, myself who is 52, have all lost our jobs, and retirement. Now we are all finally working again, but at a loss of about a 1/3 of the wages we were making. Our benefits are about 1/2 what they use to be and everything is on the rise.

My husband and I are not bother about keeping up with the Jones, but are trying to survive an economy where we worry about having enough gas to get to work, and enough food to put on the table. I fix one to two pots of beans a week, to cut down on the meat that has gotten so expensive.

With the rate of inflation being 4 to 5% and my salary raises will be only 2%, (and this is happening to all of us), we are losing ground rapidly.

There is no longer any job security, and with the rate that everything is going up, what can you do for us a president?

Don't really know why this is in the top 20 again. Perhaps someone
should be made aware that the election is over and he lost?

Here's my theory on why this keeps popping up:

the name "John McCain" are entered into search engines quite
frequently, being that he is a well known politician. perhaps this
letter, with his name in the title appears somewhat near the top of
googles results.

Does PFB have a page hit system? perhaps pages with a higher hit count
appear on the top 25. I would be willing to bet that in 2012 if mccain
runs again, this letter will reappear again.

Actually contrary to popular belief, the president doesn't really have
as much to do with the economy as you think. He has some effect but he
does not have a lot of control over things. He can't tell the American
people to buy American cars and he can't make your employer give out
proper raises.

A newly elected president does have a psychological effect on the
market

Obama:

Started with a guy whos living room I was in when I was 6.
CHANGEd to a guy who worked in the same building
CHANGEd to a guy I worked for
CHANGEd to a guy who was at one of my first political fundraisers.

After asking and bringing evidence and dragging it out of him, he
admitted his relationship. Ironically after he was elected Ayers was
glad he could come out in the open about it.

Rahm Emmanuel:

Started with no contact with Blagoyovech
CHANGEd to "one courtesy phone call" with passive discussion about the
senate seat. (as reported by the Obama team investigating, I am sure
there is no bias there).

What will it change to next?

Do you think there is a way that this letter could be moved to a

This letter has been in the top 25 since September, and the comments
have gone beyond the letter and providing feedback, but it has turned
in to a politcal debate, something that I do not feel is appropriate
to be in the top 5 consistently.

Listen, I am a life-long Democrat but will NOT vote for Obama. I do
not want an untested 'rock star' for a president. People are so
blinded by his flash and dazzle they fail to realize that there is no
meat on the platter.

Here's what's hilarious: Many people I've spoken to say they
outwardly support Obama, but will vote for McCain once they are in the
booth. Why? They fear saying anything BUT "Yes, I'm voting for
Obama!" You are seen as 'elitist white scum' or racist if you say
anything else.

People are so caught up in the "he's black" thing that they forget he
is also half white.

Now what?

McCain......has been in Washington so long that you wonder why he
hasn't 'done anything' to fix Washington in his long career there.
The truth be told, he has no idea what it's like to live 'down here'.
Yes, I respect his military service and sacrifices, but when he can
tell me what the price of a gallon of milk is at the store closest to
his house, then I might consider voting for him.

Maybe I'll write in Alfred E. Neuman for president.

I plan to vote for Obama and I strongly encourage all of you to look
into your hearts and give him your consideration.

I find it incredibly ironic that the far Right lables themselves as
the "Real" and "Patriotic" Americans yet it is precisly their economic
policies are bankrupting our country.

Moreover, think about about all the human blood that has been poured
out over the last 6 years because in a dark moment our president
scared us into submission and fabricated a motive for us to invade a
country that was a "contained treat" according to Rice in 2001. While
most of America was thirsty for revenge from 9/11 Obama stood againts
the tide and was one of the few voices of reason. When most of our
other leaders hid their heads out of fear of being branded a coward,
or unpatriotic, Obama said "no" to this unjustified war when he had
nothing to gain, and everything to lose. He did this for the simple
reason that he cares far more for our country than his reputation.
Obama understands, just as I do, that the most difficult kind of
leadership involves standing up for what is right despite overwelming
opposition. Obama earned my vote in that defining moment.

My friends I'm tired of our leaders trying to scare everyone into
submission. I beleive our next president should be the brand of
person that inspires people to follow him because of his courage.
Certainly Mccain has many redeaming qualities, however their is a very
good reason why he is being likened to Bush now. It's all the fear
mongering. Instead of offering courage and wisdom to inspire everyone
to back him, every speech has been disigned to scare Americans againts
voting for Obama. It's a tactic that i recognize and reject with
every fiber of my being. If you will do the same then the 100's of
thousands men, women, and sadly even children that have perished in
this conflict will not have died in vain.

Do you think that Obama will actually decrease your tax rate if you
earn under $250,000 a year? Think again. The best you can hope for
is that the Democratic congress and Obama will quickly pass/sign a
second stimulus package then that will be it for you. They are gong to
try and buy you off with the second stimulus package.

They will say things are much worse now (January 2009) than they were
when the tax cut promise was made. Therefore, now, we can't afford
any tax cuts at THIS TIME. They will, of course, go ahead with the
rate increases for those earning over $250,000 and to increase the
corporate and capital gains rate. They are hoping that the "Obama
sheep" will be happy with this -- that at least the rich are now
paying "their fair share".

Why is it people seem to think that government is supposed to do
something for you? The original founders idea was for government to
be out of the way ENOUGH so people could pursue their
enterprises--hence free enterprise.
Obviously limited government is necessary, but I think the founders
would be astonished and appalled as how large it has become. The
founders ideal was self-sufficiency, small government and rule of
law.
Neither candidate can really help the economy.. I believe Obama will
destroy it.
You want to fix the economy? Easy. Slash and burn government
spending. Use independent real life business accounting standards
and see if government agencies can be more efficient. Do not spend
more than you take in, it doesn"t work. Get rid of corporate taxes.
Corporations do not pay taxes anyway, they pass that bill off to
consumers. Get rid of the capital gains tax completely--that alone
would spur investment like nothing you've seen.
Most important==Vote out every single incumbent Senator and
Congressman (cross party lines to do it). they are the problem. Most
of them have been there too long. Every new tax or special tax credit
stifles the economy and is nothing more than congress abusing their
power.
Wehn all the bums are voted out, insist on a flat income tax with no
deductions-low like 12 to 15 percent with no games of deductions for
everyone. That's fair to everyoneo. The more you make the more you
keep..
It's not rocket science

I see it more with the Obama people though, some of them just repeat
the slogan or the latest news sound bite, like we need change. If you
ask them what is Obama's/Mc Cains policy for immigration they do not
know, or make something up.

Check out this youtube clip, it is quite funny.

Obama to Ayers, ACORN (all the people he denied having contact with,
pretty much LYING about these connections) has made me ill to my
stomach.

Ill because out of 300+ million Americans in this country, Obama is
who is picked by the democratic party. I have to give Hillary props
for calling out his relationship during one of their debates. He lied,
she called him out on it.

Its brilliant really.

Personally, I'm voting for Obama because of his stance on women's
health care (which includes the right to choose to have an abortion),
energy and environment, and immigration to name a few. No, I don't
think Obama will miraculously fix our economy (it's going to take a
long time and a lot of effort to do that). I'm not 100% behind Obama
or McCain. I believe that things shouldn't just be black and white (no
pun intended), Democrat or Republican. There should be a gray area in
the middle and that's where I stand. I agree with certain things Obama
is for, and certain things McCain is for. It just so happens that I'm
behind more things that Obama has said than McCain.

I enjoy getting cheap, personal health care from places like Planned
Parenthood and I think the right to choose to have an abortion is
crucial. Personally, I know way too many people out there who have
children who shouldn't. The abuse and suffering these kids go through
is unnecessary and child services won't step up and put them in a
different home, no matter how many letters I send or phone calls I
make. I'm not going to go into detail with the other things I agree
with because that would take up too much time and space, but I just
wanted to explain my point on the pro-choice position. I'm not trying
to start a debate or get people all revved up on the matter. I'm just
stating my opinion. If you took the time to read this, thank you. I'm
open for any questions you might have but please don't turn this into
a debate.

Well, to the person who fears "socialism": a little bit of socialism
in the form of "wealth redistribution," at this time, after years of
reverse "wealth redistribution" (tax cuts of all kinds for
corporations and wealthy individuals so they could "create jobs,"
while low and middle income earners saw their wages dive or stagnate)
is NOT a bad thing. Capitalism gone amok isn't good either. The
pendulum swings. Many feel as if rich corporations and individuals
have been taking a ride on their backs for a long time. Many wealthy
individuals say they know they've gotten too big a break (not only tax
cuts, but breaks on investment earnings, etc) and welcome paying more
of a fair share.

I am very young and I don't know much about politics, but I'm
wondering if Obama wants to cut taxes for the people not making as
much, but raise taxes on the wealthier people, could that be a form of
socialism? Because according to ashbrook.org (a .org site, not .com)
says,
"Under socialism a ruling class of intellectuals, bureaucrats and
social planners decide what people want or what is good for society
and then use the coercive power of the State to regulate, tax, and
redistribute the wealth of those who work for a living. In other
words, socialism is a form of legalized theft."
http://www.ashbrook.org/publicat/onprin/v1n3/thompson.html (it's the
5th paragraph)
Would putting more taxes on the wealthy and less on the poor be
considered socialism? Becuase he is redistributing the wealth of the
people making over $250,000 a year, right? I know America's economy is
a capitalism and socialism is generally considered bad by most people.
Again, I do not know a lot because I'm only a sophomore in high
school. I am not trying to show support for any side, but could
someone help me out on this?

How is Obama's plan of taxing ("spreading the wealth around" as he
puts it) the people that make $250,000 not considered socialism, and
how is it that all Obama supporters are okay with that.

Is it because most of Obama's supporters are okay with it because they
will be the recipients of this?

Why do those of you that agree with this feel aas though you are
ENTITILED to someone else's hard work?

I am not in that bracket, nor do I feel I should be entitled to it
money from people who are in that bracket. I am fine with the amount
of taxes I pay right now. Its not taxes that are killing me, but the
price of everything else that is going up which is.

He wants to cut taxes for 95 percent of the people, yet 40 percent of
those don't even pay federal income tax. So how is this a real tax
plan?

That is what I don't get. I feel as though we are turning into a
marxist/socialist society.

The sense of entitlement in this country is crazy.
Its Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not free, easy and
Utopia.

I am 26 and work in the IT world. I make plenty of money. My
grandfather always said learn everything you can, so I did. From the
time I was little I watched him, my father and anyone else that would
show me how to do something. I have no problems doing a small Drywall
job or a small networking job to make some extra cash.

My job security is myself... All of these college kids that going to
vote for Obama are going to have rude awakening when they realize that
its up to them.. Not the Government and while everybody sits around

McCain is a robot, I mean this in several ways.

1. His thinking is out of date, he really has no clue what the
average American is going through. High gas prices, high food prices,
having to decide between putting gas in the car to get to work or put
food on the table to feed my family!! Rising prices do not affect
him b/c he is Super Wealthy!! I can not relate to him.

2. He thinks that bringing Sarah Palin into this is going to help him
win Hillary voters b/c she is a mom, and working woman. I can not
relate to her either. She is just as closed minded as he is.

3. If you look at a split screen of McCain on one side and Obama on
the other, you will see many differences. But the one that stands out
the most is McCain is the past and Obama is the future. Obama is like
a breath of fresh air that we Americans desperately need; new ideas,
new visions, new solutions.

This is a very good letter which raises some serious questions that I
think would be in the McCain campaign's best interests to answer, but
as far as I can tell, they are a little bit too busy right now moving
from one giant publicity stunt to the next to have any time leftover
to address actual issues.

As a result, I'm sorry to say that you probably won't be getting any
substantial answers to your concerns but at least you can sleep
comfortably with the knowledge that his running mate knows how to
field dress a moose. So when we're all sleeping out in the streets, at
least we'll be safe from the wild moose attacks.

All presidential candidates lie while trying to get into office. I
don't fully stand behind McCain or Obama. The best we can do is
hopefully elect a president that can get us out of this recession,
whether it be the Democrat or the Republican. In regards to your
story, the recession has not hit my family as hard as it has yours so
I cannot fully relate to what you've said. But I do wish you all the
best.

by Jared C. Posted Mon September 22, 2008 @ 3:01 PM

What can he do for you?

Nothing at all if you make under $250 K a year (or $500 K in the case
of couples).

The poor and the middle class are always best served by a Democrat.

The rich, Big Business and the powerful are best served by
Republicans.

Consdering that only about 5% of Americans fall into the $250 K
(singles) or $500 K (couples) or more earning group, it's pretty
obvious how every Presidential election should go - with the Democrat
winning.

It's really that simple.

Plus, if you vote for Obama, there's a chance you will get another
stimulus check. It is guaranteed your taxes will NOT go up...only the
rich will see their rates rise.

Doris, while I appreciate your concerns over "promises" a candidate
will make, getting it done is another matter. I have learned when
times are good we must prepare for the worst. Anticipating this means
putting aside money and not giving in to spending impulses we all
have. Don't depend on a bail out masking as campaign rhetoric. Look to
support a candidate that is pushing for a national health care plan
that is free to all citizens. This is a basic platform that gets my
attention!

As is always the case, there's a lot of opinion when it comes to
politics. And we can see that below (surprisingly, on the whole, in a
civil way).

But I wonder, Doris, what you you'd like to see? I suspect that
you're not an economist (I'm not). But if you could tell the next
President (whoever it is) what to do to fix your problem, what would
it be? Are you looking for it to be mandatory for employers to give
raises in excess of COLA/inflation? Are you looking for it to be
illegal for an employer to lay off someone? Are you looking for an
increase in government jobs? A decrease in government jobs (in order
to shift the jobs to the private sector)?

What solution would YOU want?

I am voting for Obama. I like him. I like the fact that he opened
the doors at the convention, letting anyone in. I like the fact that
he knows what it is like to live day to day. Obama doesn't have 7
houses and 13 cars. And McCain thought that the middle Class is anyone
who have Less than 5 million. OK, so he doesn't have much experience,
but neither did Abe Lincoln.

He seems (Now I know it is most likely just him saying what we all
want to here. But they ALL do that!) to want to work with teachers
AND parents. He wants to try to make it where anyone who wants to go
to college can go.

Obama just seems more in touch with people like me.

I agree with the OP. This trickle down economy that the republicans
have held on to for the last 8 years isn't working. We need an
economy that goes from the bottom up. Once the middle class starts
having some extra money, then they will start spending money on things
other than the "essentials" like food and gas. If we do not have a
strong middle class, then we do not have a strong economy. Empowering
the middle class through lower taxes, higher pay, and a real energy
solution for the furture will help get us back on track.

... well if we could get congress and pelosi to actually allow
offshore drilling, we could have more gas... which *should* drive gas
prices down, and then drive other prices back down too.

Yes I know they approved offshore drilling, but only if the drilling
is over 50 miles out from shore. Too bad most of the areas rich in
oil are actually *within* 50 miles of shore...

And, keep in mind, the President cannot force prices to go down. All
he or she can do is put out a budget plan and hope that congress
doesn't overspend it (or shovel it into their own pet projects).

Want to really get fired up about retirement issues?... did you know
that the people in congress pull full pay, even after they retire.
Yep, while the rest of us are trying to put money away for retirement,
they retire and pull 100% of the paycheck they got while they were
still working.

And people wonder why we can't get rid of rising costs.

*sigh*

and... on top of that... it's now "patriotic" to pay higher taxes.
yeah... anyone else almost barf at that smug tone he used to say that?

Here's the thing about both Obama and McCain -- neither of them have a
plan of any sort. Both are ignorant when it comes to economics.
McCain has even admitted to it. The best you can hope for is that,
whoever is elected, they will surround themselves with competent
economic advisors. My belief is that the next president will lead an
"improvising presidency" when it comes to our economy.

To the OP,

YOU worry about retirement? I'm only 30 and I freak out everyday
whether there will be social security when I retire. It's just
unbelievable that the country is where it is at today. I mean, I went
out and went to school, trained for one of the in demand
careers(Medical Billing and Coding)and cannot find one damned job!

Man, I NEED people to retire! make room for me! I want your jobs! lol

I honestly find this letter extremely refreshing. I've made my
choice, but it would be nice if both sides would lay down their actual
plans rather than continuing to point the finger or divert everyone's
attention.

He'll lower your taxes, but your food prices will rise, your
investments will tank with further deregulation, the value of your
home will go down 20%, gas will continue to go up, your children will
inherit the debt of not only our two current wars but the next one
with Iran (which McCain favors), your medical insurance will
skyrocket, health costs will continue to rise because the middleman is
making off like a bandit.

In a nutshell, since you're not in the richest 5% of cizitens, he
can't (um, won't) do a darn thing for you.
