KFC Refused to Supply Additional Plates

Posted Sun June 8, 2008 12:00 pm, by Kevin W. written to Kentucky Fried Chicken

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

On Saturday, June 7, 2008, around 5:40pm I went to your Columbia, MD (Snowden & Minstrell) KFC. I ordered two baskets of chicken (32 pieces) for a get together with my friends. When I asked for 20 plates I was advised that the plates were typically for eat-in customers only. When I asked why they were discriminating against people who take out I was told they are always running short on plates but he would ask his manager if I would like. When the manager told the cashier I could only have 10 (and she was doing me a favor at 10), I then asked to see her. Evidently a shift manager, told me that her manager would not let her give out more. I asked her if I could even pay for additional plates and I was informed that she didn't even have a way to ring that up. I asked her if she really preferred a corporate complaint over just providing good customer service and she said that she had her specific direction from the store manager and that I could call 1-800-KFC.

So, with 32 pieces of chicken and 20 friends coming over I had to be late to my own party because KFC refused to accommodate a reasonable request by a customer. The other people in line as well as my party guests (about 25 people total) also thought this was poor customer satisfaction.

As a business owner myself I understand the value of customer feedback. I would like to know what KFC plans on doing going forward or if you prefer that I go to the many other food providers out there for chicken (Chicken Out, Boston Market, Giant, Weis, Safeway, etc.).

I look forward to what KFC plans on doing to keep me as a customer, if anything.

If you are looking to entertain and want your event to look good even
if you are serving KFC, go to www.dontdodishes.com.This is a great
site that has some really nice plastic disposable plates.

A business owner would know to plan ahead. Other then family, who
serves food on a styrofoam plate. This reeks of a throw together event
looking for much needed help. Please purchase the appropiate dinnerware
for such an occassion.

My bet is your not gonna be a business owner very long Kevin W. WAKE
UP! You just don't give away those expensive plates because someone
asks! With your business saavy how bout you go online and price out
those hard plastic plates they use!? I can't believe they would not
sell them to you though unless they were running low for the dine in
customers? You could have used paper plates and saved that party. I
would absolutely love to see your little part table set up with the
buffet you offered your guests! LOL did you use your own dishes to
put the Mash Potatoes in? Gravy? Slaw? LOL And did you cut the
pieces of chicken in half so it looked like a lot of chicken? I also
think it would be funny to see the reaction of 20 "guests" when you
showed up late and delivered this buffet! (I'd be flabbergasted and
hungry!)
YOU SIR, HAVE LEFT OUT A LOT OF THIS STORY AND WE BUSTED YOU ON IT
HUH?

Finally, what in the world did you end up eating ALL that food off
of? Napkins?

You said that you were willing to pay extra. It's KFC, not KFP. They
don't sell plates there. If you were indeed willing to pay your money,
go pick some up at a store.

The prices are tailored to specific costs and profit margins, which
include a single plate. They would lose money if they gave them away
to everybody.

Disposable plates at walmart are : $2.50 for 150!!

Even the dollar store sells them!

I'm sure the workers at KFC would prefer you took your whiney keister
to a competitor. 32 pieces of chicken for a party of 20; that's
pretty damn stingy!

Can you possibly any cheaper? Buy your own plates for the party you
made the choice to have. Let me guess, you probably had everyone
bring food to YOUR party, so YOU wouldn't have to do any work yet you
still consider yourself "the hostess".

Unbelievable!

If you can afford to feed 20 people, you can afford to buy a few paper
plates, for pete's sake.

surely you understand that 32 pieces of chicken won't feed 20 people.
You also understand that giving away any product is bad business.
Plates cost money, and the offer to give you 10 was a good one. The
menu said bucket of chicken, not bucket of chiken and plates.

I think the good folks at KFC should simply ignore your letter. If
you are expecting an apology or some free stuff, I wouldn't circle the
date on your calendar.

You paid for 2 buckets of chicken, not 2 buckets of chicken plus all
of the plates you want. I think it waas reasonable for them to offer
you 10 plates.

I wouldn't expect plates for 20 people either. Get some paper plates
from the convenience store if you must. Besides, the minute you
wrongly threw the word "discriminating" in, I was annoyed.

Those plates cost money. Giving you a lot eats into their already
extremely slim profit margin.

Kevin W.,

Your request for 20 plates is over the top.

KFC does not have a responsibility to stock your needs for your get
together.

As a business owner put in this into the context of the service you
offer or what you manufacture....if somebody asked for twice what you
had established as SOP I bet you would do the same as KFC.

I don't understand how your lack of foresight is "discriminating"
against you. That word is thrown around far too lightly.

No reasonable person would expect a restaurant to supply that many
plates. They have to pay for those plates and you could have easily
purchased inexpensive paper plates elsewhere as someone else here
mentioned.

Plan ahead next time.

oh, come on.

you can get 50-100 normal paper plates for less than a dollar. i used
to work at kfc, and the plates they have are definitely more sturdier
and more expensive, and therefore they can't just hand you an entire
stack for free.

if you are indeed a business owner, you should already know that. buy
your own paper plates. i don't think any of the other chicken places
you mentioned would give you an entire party's worth of paper plates
for free either.

I have ordered buckets of chicken to go at KFC and have never
received, yet alone asked if I needed plates. Your request is
unreasonable. I agree with the other posters who have mentioned that
it seems like you were asking KFC to supply the plates and utensils
for your party.

If you wanted plates, utensils and food supplied you should have
ordered from a catering service and not KFC.

You knew you were having a party, you knew there would be chicken
served (among other dishes that required plates I am sure)yet you
expected KFC to supply your plates just because you did not want to
purchase these. Also you never wrote in your letter if you requested
eating utensils either but I bet you did.

And as business owner you should understand that customer service is
first but that you also have to place restrictions at times when
people ask for things that are not within normal limits.

I cannot agree more with the manager at KFC regarding your request.
They have to account for supplies just like anyone else in any other
business does.

Once again customers don't relize how stores and inventory works. The
KFC store has to pay for those plates and at the end of the month the
manager has to answer when the inventory numbers are off by 32.One or
two fine but 32 is crazy.Buy your own paper plates.

If you are planning a party, it's up to you to make sure you'll have
what you need to serve your guests. I'm planning a party for early
July. One of the things we are serving is Sicilian pizza cut into
bite size pieces. I don't expect the pizza place to supply me with
small plates for my guests, I'll buy them.

Your request was definitely not reasonable.

Your request was not reasonable. The only reason you were late for
your own party was your lack of planning. I can't speak for the rest
of the places that you are planning on taking your business, but I can
assure you Weis and Giant aren't going to give you free stuff just
because you asked either.

Sorry, but I'm going to disagree that asking for 20 free plates is a
reasonable request. It's not up to KFC to provide supplies for your
party. Paper plates are not cheap (as you must be aware, or you would
have just picked some up yourself) and so to keep costs down KFC only
provides them to customers to use while they eat the chicken in the
restaurant.

If it's their policy not to supply plates for take-out orders, it was
very nice of them to give you 10. What do you really want from them?
10 more plates? Napkins? Paper cups?
