default due to returns not processed

I returned some cosmetics to my local Macy’s store that I ordered online. I thought that they would simply be recharged to my account and that the return hadn’t shown yet for some reason. During this period my husband lost his job and we were evicted due to our landlords entering foreclosure. Unfortunately I lost track of the account, and I am sorry that I let it go into default. Prior to this I was only late on one payment on my card- that bill came when I was on my honeymoon and I simply forgot about it. I have paid this account in full.

Thank You for the kindness you have shown to issue me a new Macy’s card to prove myself to you again, however, this incident has left a bruise on my credit that is preventing my husband and I from purchasing a home of our own.

I am writing to inquire as to whether Macys Department Stores would consider making a goodwill adjustment to the credit reporting bureaus on my Macys Credit Account. I am asking whether Macys would remove the adverse late payments and charge-off records from the account in reporting to the credit bureaus.

SOrry, but getting at least FOUR businesses to whom you owe money to
give you "goodwill" fixes is just silly. You had credit cards at at
least four different stores and racked up debt you couldn't handle.
Now you're learning a tough lesson that many people have learned in
the last two years or so.

I thought it took 7 years for such an item to go off your report. The
other day I heard it is only 2 years. Good news for you.

Unfortunately I do not believe the banks take personal circumstances
into account. I personally don't feel "goodwill" requests should be
met. Everyone knows the consequences for failing to pay a loan or
credit line on time when they open the account. That is why I have
never borrowed more than I could afford to pay off if an emergency
comes up.
