Treat People Equally Market Basket!

I was in your Rowley MA store today and overheard a manager telling a male employee that they do not hire males as cashiers. I have been shopping at Market Basket for many years and I can't recall a single time I saw a male cashier. They are ALWAYS female. The males are restricted to more physical work such as bagging or collecting shopping carriages.
I realize your grocery store operates like it is 1950 and I often admire that but this is a rule that needs to go. Not only is it illegal but it also makes me not want to shop at your store anymore.

I worked PT at a grocery store that had a similar policy. The thing is, you were required to have stocking experience in order to "qualify" for promotions, but women weren't allowed to stock. Eventually they got sued, it cost the chain a lot of money and they had to change their hiring and employment practices.
As a feminist, both of these situations are sexist and unfair, to both men and women.

It is discrimination. The idea is that female cashiers are more pleasant to the senses and makes the customer service experience better. In other countries you can only get hired if you are attractive and young, some companies even have height/weight limits for their staff in customer service positions... yes I'm still talking about regular retail stores.
In the USA however, such discrimination is illegal and gender equity states that men and women should be allowed to work the same jobs.
In one of my past retail stores I had a female warehouse attendant. She handled everything very well and moved the stock around like a dude. She was a big, tough lady and her husband was a smaller guy. People are made in a variety to match differently to each other; that means that some men are big, some are small, some women are strong and others not so much.
The mentality that only women should be cashiers and only men should be stockers is extremely outdated and idiotic.

I don't seeing you complaining about that, so I'm guessing not. I suppose if they are giving males jobs other than as cashiers everything works out.
