Newly packaged way overpriced Whole Wheat Fig Newton

Our family has been eating Fig Newtons for many years. When Whole Wheat Fig Newtons came out we switched to those in the same full size bar in the 12 ounce package. While shopping, I asked my 10 year old grandson to get several packages of Whole Wheat Fig Newtons. We usually finish one package in the car on the way home. He came back and said, "Grandpa, they're ripping us off , come look." I went to the shelf and there were no one pound packages, but in their place were boxes of Whole Grain Fig Newtons. My grandson pointed out that the box only held 8.4 ounces for the same price as the regular 1 pound package, and the 1 pound Whole Wheat package we had been buying. I concurred that we were being ripped off and congratulated him on being alert. I brought my other Grand kids over and showed them how people are being cheated by the manipulation of the package size and weight. 1/2 the weight for the same price as the regular package. In other words to get the same 1 pound we always got we'd pay $6.00 which we all agreed was rediculous. I bought a box to see what they were like, and gave each kid 2 packs. The comments were "cheap, they're all puffed up and only half full" , and "they must think we're stupid". Well I felt insulted that Nabisco would think I was so stupid and ignorant that I could be so easily ripped off.

As far as I'm concerned, the whole Wheat Fig Newtons have gone the way of the Nabisco flat rasin cookies we used to eat in large
quantities.

Make the 1 pound packages available again. If you want to continue cheating people, put the overpriced by 2X boxes in another part of the store so customers cannot compare weight and price and realize their being screwed.

Good for you for turning this into a teaching opportunity with your
grandkids. I have fond memories of times when my grandpa used
situations like this as ways to help me learn about the world. To
this day, I remember his little sayings about proper grammar ("Ain't
ain't a word; it ain't in the dictionary," or "Never is never an
adjective, but always is always an adverb.")and remember him saying,
"Well, you should learn more about [insert topic here] and find out
why you don't like it." Those are the things that will be your legacy
to your grandkids, so it's great that you were able to take advantage
of it!

This has been happening for 20+ years -- instead of raising prices,
food manufacturers just reduce the quantity you're buying, in small
degrees, but keep the price the same. This is why we no longer have
16-ounce cans of vegetables or beans. Instead, we have 14.5 ounces,
or 13 ounces. They've even done it to evaporated milk, and it PISSES
ME OFF because they're messing with recipes when they do this.
Recipes often call for ingredients to be a certain amount based on the
commonly known quantities in which they are sold. TO start changing
the size of the container throws off many recipes.

I just wish they'd raise prices honestly.

Are you sure this isnt something that was done by the store and not
Nabisco? The pricing I mean.

I dont understand the "puffed up and only half full" comment. Does
that mean that the fig newtons themselves are puffed up and didnt have
enough filling in them? If thats the case then maybe there was a
problem in processing.

Anyway, I think you should check to see how much they are charging for
the wheat fig newtons at other stores. See if its an across the board
price hike or just in that one particular chain. If it is something
going on everywhere its possible that Nabisco has raised their prices
on more than just the fig newtons and it will be seen at all stores.

If you find out its just this one store then you should send a letter
to their company about the price change as well.
