Olympics 2012 Opening Ceremony Broadcast

I am extremely thankful for the wonderful broadcast across the many NBC family of channels of the Olympics. It has been really good across the years.
But for crying out loud, why would you not telecast the Opening Ceremony of London 2012 live? The kids are on their summer holiday, the ceremony would have started at 3 PM CST, the perfect time and got over at a perfect time.
Instead, we had to endure a taped broadcast which went close to midnight! It was so frustrating getting all the social media updates about the event spoiling all the excitement.
I understand the business and monetary aspect of all this, but with seventeen days of programming at your disposal, I think NBC should have chosen to be a little better at decision making here.
Please be more considerate while making these decisions. In today's world of internet and social media, much as we may try, it is difficult to isolate ourselves from happenings in the world. I am sure a lot of us would have enjoyed the ceremony a lot more had we not already known what was coming!!

NBC most definitely is allowed to show live feeds, but they are not doing so in the U.S. purely for money (advertising dollars).
The rest of the world gets to see live feeds of all the sports. Only the U.S. is getting screwed.
Screw you, NBC.

I read that NBC is not allowed to show live feeds.
Besides, if it was shown live, ratings would have been quite low as most people would be at work (and it's always about ratings)

I liked that they were delayed. I would have missed most of the opening ceremonies if they would have ran them live because I work 8-5. Everything is available live online if you want to watch it there.

My big complaint about the opening ceremonies was the fact that Matt Lauer wouldn't shut up. It was like the frickin' Rose Parade. He had to describe in detail every single thing that happened, what everyone wore, what color the lights were, how tall people were, etc. Really destroyed the experience of just enjoying the ceremony.

While many of you are saying that it is due to broadcasting during prime time - what was stopping them from rebroadcasting at 9 pm but also offering a live broadcast - or since many have stated that it is being shown on multiple channels under the NBC banner, then perhaps one of those channels could have broadcast live while the "mother station" could show it during prime time.
As for pre-empting shows... what shows would it pre-empt at 4 pm EDT? Family Feud re-runs and one of those Judge shows were on at 4 and 5, followed by local news on the NBC station we get here. Not exactly "Must see tv"
We were fortunate, in Canada, the Opening Ceremonies were broadcast live across all CTV stations and the sports channels owned by CTV (TSN) and then, CTV re-broadcast the Opening Ceremonies at 9pm EDT for those who were either working or who were unable to catch them earlier.
I noticed the Americans weren't broadcasting live and thought it was a rather foolish decision, but hey, I guess money talks and that is truly what NBC finds important - where they get the biggest advertising dollar. It is a shame though as I usually love to watch the majority on the Canadian network and then flip back and forth between the american and Canadian broadcasts during the parade of nations, usually to hear what is being said and which countries get skipped during commercials etc.
The rest of the Olympics, I stick to my Canadian stations. You won't catch me watching NBC this time around.

There is a 6 hours delay between London & parts of the U.S. NBC makes the decision regarding when or if the broadcast the opening ceremony. They bought the rights to broadcast the Olympics, & so it is entirely up to them when to broadcast the opening ceremony based on when they think they will get the best viewership.
