Unsolicited Junk Text Messages on my Nextel Cell Phone

I am receiving UNSOLICITED JUNK text messages on BOTH of the 2 phones on my account! I DO NOT even have text messaging service on my phones and never have because I don't see the point. I am now being charged on 2 phones for each UNSOLICITED JUNK text message that is received. I don't even have to option of not taking the message as you would with a phone call. I called Nextel Partners, my provider, and told them that I do not want any capabilities to even receive text messages. They said that the only way that you can remove the ability to receive text messages is to REMOVE MY VOICEMAIL! That isn't acceptable so I then asked to be sent a copy of the text messages so that I can see who they actually came from. They said that Nextel can't tell who they came from. That doesn't sound right. None of this sounds right. Sounds like an easy way for Nextel to pull in some extra cash to me! Why would you want to honor a customer's request to stop receiving unsolicited junk text messages and having to pay when it makes you A LOT of extra cash.

Step up to the plate and be the first provider to STOP this. Honor customer's requests to remove ALL text messaging (including the ability to receive) WITHOUT ALSO REMOVING SOMETHING IMPORTANT LIKE THEIR VOICEMAIL! From my understanding, this problem has not yet been deemed illegal, but it's not far. As you probably know if you've done your homework, there are some cases pending already. Verizon has actually stepped up and joined in one of the suits against a junk text messager. Do the right thing and honor your customer's request when it comes to THEIR cell service, OR at least honor my request. My contract is over at the beginning of January 2007. Seems like a good time to start searching for another carrier.

I know they combined sprint and Nextell, but I am not sure of Nextel's
TOS. I know with Sprint you can still eliminate texts from coming in.
My little brother's phone is on my plan and they disabled his

Well, if it helps at all, I worked for Cingular for a brief period and
I know that Cingular phones CAN just disable text messages. I do not
know why Nextel cannot do the same.

I definitely feel your pain. I handle about 2000 Nextels for my firm
and we've had the exact same problem. It was really bad in one
district and we wanted to do the same as you, block text messaging
only to be told the same thing, that we would lose voicemail.

However, as someone else said, before you switch carriers, check out
their policy regarding this. I think it's pretty much that same at
all of them.

I feel your pain, but before you switch carriers, check and make sure
that the same policy regarding unwanted text messages can be
activated. I have T-Mobile and when I asked to have the service
disabled, they said they are unable to do it. I believe, as you
probably do, the companies are unwilling to disable this feature so
that these unwanted text messages increase revenue. I too believe
that the companies must be forced to provide an opt out option for
text messages. Good luck with your fight!
