For reference, the policy is: "Nobody beats our prices ... Guaranteed! Should you find a lower price at any other store, we will match it on the spot - guaranteed! (Must be an identical, in-stock item. Excludes free product offers, special orders, services, Internet purchases, liquidation, ad errors, clearance, refurbished and close out items.) If you show us a lower price from another store on a brand new identical item at the time of purchase, we will match it. If you show us a lower price from another store on a brand new identical item within 14 days of your purchase, we will give you the difference. Our price is the final price you pay after any discounts, coupons, instant savings, and mail in savings."
All it says is that you have to SHOW them. But it doesn't say how. However, the policy does say "We reserve the right to reject any price match that cannot be verified by proof acceptable to us in our sole discretion."
So, the way of verification is up to them.
But, gosh, if it's not something they've advertised, I just don't see how you can prove the price.
OK, actually I do, because I've run into this before.
You need to purchase the item at the Staples, bring in your receipt to Office Depot, and they'll give you back the difference. You then need to return the item to the Staples. In other words, a pain in the neck and not usually worth it.
That said, the purpose of the guarantee is to give you confidence as a buyer. If you've annoyed at them because they won't call to verify price, then it kind of defeats the point.
