Poorly prepared meals

My family traveled to Idaho for a short vacation last week and we decided to go to Outback Steakhouse for dinner. The food, in the past and at other locations, has always been wonderful, but not this time. We arrived at the restaurant on 3/20/08 at 4pm. We arrived just after the restaurant opened and there wasn't a huge number of people dining at the same time. Normally, we could expect some lower quality food/service if there were numerous customers and it was extremely busy, but that was not the case at the time of our visit.
My family ordered the following:
Appetizer - blooming onion
Husband - Steak, Shrimp & Scallop meal special along with a ceaser salad, beer
Myself - soup and ceaser salad, glass of red wine
Son 1 - grilled cheese sandwich, rootbeer
Son 2 - cheeseburger, lemonade
We were served our drinks and I was rather disappointed in such a small glass that the wine was served in, but not only that but the glass was only half full and we paid $8.00 for the wine. Based on that small quanity, for that price, it seemed unreasonable and I would not order another. On a positive note, the blooming onion arrived and was wonderful as expected, but unfortunately that was the only highlight of our meal. Next our salads arrived and I was well beyond disappointed in the salad, especially because it was half of my meal and we paid extra to get my husband one of these salads as well. In the salad there was no, and I am not exaggerating, NO green to my salad. The lettuce was white and yellow - which is the very last bitter part of a head of romaine lettuce. It was very unappealing visually and tasted awful. Eventually my soup arrived and it was fine. Now when the rest of everyone's meals arrived, I could not believe that Outback could actually serve - in good conscience - what they served to my kids. Now my kids are young and don't really notice things, but I most certainly did. Outback had burnt both the grilled cheese sandwich and the burger pattie. They still put the patty into the bun and flipped the sandwich over so the burnt side was underneath the sandwich. Neither of my kids ate their entire meal due to the unsatisfactory flavor. We were short on time, as we were meeting other people shortly, and didn't have time to send everything back for new meals. Lastly, both my husband and I were amazed at how small the steak was that came with his meal, honestly, if the steak is going to be THAT SMALL, you really should describe it in the menu as a 2oz steak, it was incrediably deceiving based on the photo and description as is. When my husband eats at Outback, he has an expectation when it comes to the steak and he was extremely disappointed with the size of the steak.
I honestly, just can't believe how the entire meal, costing us over $70.00, could actually be the worst meal we've had in a very long time, especially since it wasn't even rush hour or anything. It was almost like there wasn't a chef on staff at the time and the meals were being cooked by someone with little experience, because I just can't believe it could be prepared so poorly and actually served to us. This is not the quality of food I expect from Outback. I travel to Spokane regularly for work and normally have a decent meal at Outback out North of Spokane. When I travel with my family, especially on a vacation, I want to have a great meal and a great time and I just can't say we had either at this restaurant. Eating out is half the fun of a vacation for my family. The following two nights we ate locally as well and the food elsewhere was wonderful and it makes it very difficult for me to convince my family to go back to Outback in the future and spent hard earned money on a meal that might not be worth it.
I certainly hope that this was an odd event and not a regular occurance, or else someone needs to have a chat with the chef and work out the bugs.
I would like to receive a refund for the meal, so that we could at least attempt eating at the restaurant again to see if the quality has improved.

Short on time or not, the food and beverage quality/quantity issues should have been brought to the attention of the manager while you were still at Outback so that he/she could assess the situation and adjust the bill accordingly.

I know you were pressed for time, however, just a quick minute or two with the manager couldve resolved so much without the following correspondance. Even if he couldnt replace the meals then, managers can give you gift cards or dinner vouchers for a next visit.
Having guests leave upset is not the restraunts goal. They like to speak to the guest in person right when the incident happens.
From my experiance, a majority of guests leave because of the fear of confrontation. They react better on the phone or email and would rather handle at a later time. It's the managers duty to correct everything then. Take advatage of having someone there to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

If you don't like it, send it back.
That's the policy at our restaurant. The cooks are more than happy to accommodate you. Additionally, most times, there are not "chefs" present at the restaurant. There are line cooks, who simply prepare the food.
Also, when steakhouses advertise steaks, the size listed in the net weight before cooking, so a lot of the weight is in the fat and cooks off during the preparation process.
And always, eat local. It's better. There is a group called the Best Independent Restaurant association. There is a directory of restaurants on their website, which are usually excellent.

here, on whether or not her complaint has merit and deserves a refund.
Debbie, I hope you'll come back and let us know what happens.

But because you stated in your letter you were pressed for time and therefore did not mention nor send back your food, you get nothing in my opinion. You need to address these things up front, when they are actually happening.
A lot of people are passive/aggressive (not suggesting that you are) and don't like confrontation, but hide behind letters and emails and expect the same results that you receive when you're live and in person. Doesn't work that way.......usually.
At least you had some other good meals on your vacation by eating at local restaurants. I'm a HUGE proponent for only eating locally. I only eat at a chain if there are zero other options and that is hardly ever the case. Chains are just never as good.

I read your letter and found it just lovely to read. I like when people expect poor food quality when an establisment is busy. I'm not quite there myself, but it's nice to see someone willing to be flexible.
As nice as it was to read, I'm sure it took more time to write it, than it would to bring up the issue right there. Outback usually has great servers who are more than willing to listen, and if that doesn't work, then they have managers whos job is to listen to and correct these issues.

The horse is running down the road, and the door is flapping on the barn. It is too late to make a complaint like this.
The obvious reason is there is no way to prove it happened. People could make up any old story they desire. An example is: "The waiter spilled beets down my back, and hit me in the head with a jug of ice water. Later he told us we all a needed botox treatment. I want the waiter fired and a complete refund."
Did you ask how much the wine cost before you bought it? Did you tell the server that you wanted the wine served in an inappropriately full glass, against etiquette? Did your husband have to order a medley of steak, shrimp and scallops, or could he have just ordered a steak? If he wanted a steak, he should have ordered a steak. Then his steak would have been more than 2 oz.

Of course, I'm going to start with the obvious: Did you speak with the manager? Complain to your waiter/ress? That's what should be done when you have complaints about your meal.
But this: "flipped the sandwich over so the burnt side was underneath the sandwich"
My mom would do that with french toast or pancakes. We learned early on to look on the underside to see if she was slippin' us a burnt breakfast. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! ;)
