Smoking wait list

I went to Outback Steakhouse (Rt 34 in Naperville, IL) last Saturday night for dinner. It was packed with customers, as I expected. I did expect to have to wait for a table. What really blew my mind was the smoking section was a free for all. There was no 'wait' for smoking, you had to fight for a table. We even helped one of the managers find a table for a handicapped patron. He gave us a free appetizer for this, which was nice. I had to hover over a table I saw paying their bill, and a group stood in front of me waiting for it as well. I had to talk to the people at the table, tell them their baby was cute, and basically BS with them so I could have that table. It also wasn't fair to the people who arrived before me, but who knew who they were, because there was no list! What really took the cake was the people behind me left, and 2 different people sat down at the same time. Management had to be called because they began fighting.
If there is a wait, Outback should have a wait for the smoking section as well as non smoking, especially if it's busy!

people complain about everything. you have to choices either you go and wait for a table in the lounge or you wait for a table in the dinning room. if the customer wants to be an ss and fight for a table hey be my guest. they fight all the time for the dinning room tables as well. i see it i work there. it is the store policy. lounge is more informal it is a first come first serve basis. it is not our fault that people want to be savages and fight for tables in the lounge.

I know the Outback where I used to live didn't really have a "smoking section" per se, just a clump of booths next to the bar. This area was euphemistically referred to as "open seating," and when you came in the host/hostess would say something like, "there is a 45 minute wait for non-smoking, or there is open seating at the bar." This really sucked, since it basically meant, "We don't care, just go fight for a table if you don't want to wait," and led to the kind of madness the OP describes. I am pretty sure this is the case at all Outbacks, and it is poorly planned to say the least.
