Hair loss with Pantene Pro V?

Posted Tue February 10, 2004, by Cheryl F. written to Pantene

Write a Letter to this Company

I have a complaint about the experience with one of the products made by Pantene , and I hope someone can address it. I'm really annoyed by this. My specific complaint is about Pantene Pro V.

I have been using your pro V shampoo and conditioner for about 4 months and have been noticing a thinning of my hair for the past two months. I am writing to let you know that I think that there could very well be a problem with your product. Up until my use of your product, my hair has always been very thick.

I am sad to complain about the products. My hair has felt soft and silky with the use of the shampoo and condtioner. The hair loss issue, however, has discouraged me from using your product or recommending it to anyone in the future.

Look into your product and see if there is anything that could be causing this. I noticed that you had at least one other similar complaint.

Thanks for listening. I hope to hear from someone at Pantene soon.

I've always had lots of curly thick hair, but last year I noticed I
was losing a LOT of hair, Unusual amounts of hair, I decided to have
my thyroid checked to make sure there wasn't a physical problem, My
test results were perfect, but while talking with my sister about
this, she ask if I was using Pantene shampoo or conditioner? I said,
Yes, actually I've used Pantene for over a year now. (I really liked
it) She said, she couldn't use it because it makes her hair fall out,
I went online to find out if this may be my problem and I was SHOCKED
at the complaints against Pantene... for Hair loss!
My next hair appointment with my stylist I mentioned this to her, she
said, ABSOLUTELY, never use Pantene they're even taught in Beauty
School that Pantene and Mane'nTail will make your hair fall out.

So, the data seems to be conclusive that Pantene must include some
sort of harsh chemicals and sulfates related to hair loss because I
too have experienced the same results with the products.

Initially after use, my hair felt soft and silky and the smell was
delightful. But at the age of 25 my hair is thinning rapidly with no
valid explanation other than I changed to Pantene months ago because
it was cheaper than my original product, Nexxus, and smelled great.
Pantene products are the only difference in my hair regime and its
alarming to discover the product I had so much faith in has led my
hair down a horrible path.

The edges and the nape of hairline are practically non-existent and I
was finally beginning to make strides in the length of my hair before
switching to this product. Needless to say, I just came back from the
beauty supply store buying a replacement shampoo and condition and
have decided to discontinue use of the Pantene line of products. I
would not recommend the product to anyone looking to maintain a full
and healthy head of hair. =(

Oh my god. I thought it was just me, but I also saw how I was using
Pantene and my hair would come out in clumps. I was so scared that I
actually thought I was dying. So I quickly changed to herbal essence
and my hair does not fall out at all. I bet there are harsh chemicals
in Pantene products. When I used it, it also left my hair in horrible
knots, greasy and of course alot of hair would fall off

I have used Pantene for a while now and at first, your hair looks and
feels great, but after awhile, i have noticed significant hair loss.
every time i washed my hair, i had to dig hair out of the drain. This
is quite alarming as my hair is thin to begin with. at first i
thought it was my age, 45, but now i see that this kind of hair loss
is not normal. I am quite relieved to see that there are many other
people who experienced this same problem and the solution is simple,
switch to another brand, preferably a natural one.

thank you for all your comments, i really appreciate learning of
this.

I too have experienced hair loss using Pantene products. I just had
my niece drop by and she and her husband have noticed loss of hair
using pantene products. I used to have gloriously thick hair but now
I wear wigs to cover the hair loss. Also, I used it on my show dogs
and they dropped their coats, much to my dismay with just a single use
of the product. Now I am concerned as to whether it will grow back.
I NEVER thought it would be Pantene until all the problems that
pinpoint it to our hair loss.

This morning I decided to see what causes hair loss as I have VERY
thick hair and have lost almost half of it in the last few
weeks....huge amounts. I only started using Pantene plus cond Pro v
about the same time . Though maybe it was hormonal or something but
now am convinced it is the shampoo. Has anyone had their hair grow
back???? Can you see new hair growth after stopping using it.

I'm 48 years old and I am suffering from major hair loss within the
last year. I've had every test done on me imaginable and they have all
come out negative, I believe it is the sampoo and I am stopping use of
it immediately. A daughter of one of my close friends was also losing
her hair and was convinced it was the shampoo and stopped using it,
she stopped losing hair.

My hairline is thinning at an alarming rate since using this product.
My hair used to be thick and full just a year ago. Since I started
using this product, I lose numerous hair with every wash. I thought it
was just me. Now, I know I am not alone. I just threw away the 2 brand
new bottles I kept on the shelf.

I am switching other brand of shampoos before I go bald.

Note: I am 25 years old and even my 56 year dad has more hair than I
do. That makes me sad and disappointed.

I am 37 used Pantene for years and had the same problem. My Dr told me
it was Thyroid, but guess what, when the internet was flooded with
"hair loss pantene" sites, I switched. I still have thryroid issues
but no hair loss issues!!

I am 27 years old, I am losing hair at an alarming rate. I am
researching hair loss and I am finding alot of women complaining about
Pantene. I have used pantene for almost a year and I am coming to
realize that this has to be the reason for my hair loss. I feel
depressed, I used to have thick sexy hair , now I have patches of my
hair thinning! Im practically in tears! I am going to try Nioxin,
which I read somewhere it helps, and I hope that pantene does
something to their formula to stop this! I really love the products
but i can't part with my hair because of it! Good luck ladies.

I'm 64 and have short gray hair, fairly thick and healthy. I wash it
every day. A couple of months ago, after my shower, I noticed a very
large clump of hair sitting over the drain grate. It was shocking how
much there was, like when someone's on chemo. I ruled out the clump
having come from an accumulation from below the drain grate. It was
too new and fresh looking.

I was freaking out. I immediately started searching online for hair
loss information. I found many posts about Pantene Pro V being a cause
for hair loss. Guess what I'd been using for several months...Pantene
Pro V! In fact, I'd just bought huge bottles (on sale) of both the
shampoo and conditioner. I immediately threw them out. I bought some
Arrojo products from the beauty store. I became obsessed with checking
my hair for falling strands...until I realized that my hair was not
coming out anymore, only the normal shedding.

I still find it hard to believe that a bunch of hair just all came out
at once, even if you realize that normal shedding may mean less one
day and more another. But I can't imagine where the hair at the bottom
of my shower came from if not from my head that very morning.

The only connection I can make, based on all the anecdotal evidence,
is that it was caused by Pantene Pro V. Scary episode.

I am 46 years old. I also had nice thick hair, curly and full of body.
I have noticed that my hair falls out drastically. I can shower and
have it rolling down my body when I rinse. I never thought about the
shampoo. I am definately changing and would like to hear a reply from
Pantene as to what type of research they conducted and the results of
prolonged use of their product.I am now looking for something to use
that may help. I will not use Pantene after reading the comments
posted.

At first I thought I was going crazy....my mom had some hairloss (with
age) but I am 32 not 102! I had beautiful naturally curly hair, now, I
have thin, weak, brittle and limp hair. I have patches in my hair
that has no hair. I didn't realize it till recently when I was
trying to think of what has changed in the last year that my hair
would be falling out? Not enough could happen for that.....Thanks for
bringing my mind to ease and I am not the only one this has happened
to. Amy B.

I have the same exact complaint. I switched to Pantene because I
wanted to try something new and initially it made my hair very smooth
and silky. I've not cut my hair since switching to the product two
months ago (not even a trim!) and my hair is noticeably shorter,
thinner, and dry. I miss my long hair and I've gone back to my
original shampoo and conditioner.

I hope that Pantene will be able to resolve this issue.

I began using Pantene Pro V about a month ago and have suddenly (int
he last 2 weeks) begun to lose large amounts of hair as well!! My
scalp also became very dry. I've read that the hair loss and scalp
irritation may have something to do with the sulfates in the product.

My boyfriend's hair was full when I met him, for the last 3 months
we've been using pantene classic clean and he is totally showing
balding on the top of his head, and his family line has full sets of
hair.
We will be throwing away all these shampoos and switching to something
that will hopefully promote hair growth again.

Pantene Pro V does cause hair loss in most people over time. Switching
to a better and more natural unisex solution, such as Herbal Essences,
is my recommenation to you. I too have been loosing hair to this
defective product.
