The Princess and The Frog Party Themed Supplies

Posted Sun May 23, 2010 12:39 am, by Katrina B. written to Party City Corporation

Write a Letter to this Company

My son and daughter are having a shared birthday party next weekend. I went to Party City to order balloons & purchase some last minute trinkets for the party. My son's part of the party will have a Batman theme & my daughter's part of the party will have Princess and the Frog theme. And therein lies my problem. The store I visited in Crossroads Shopping Center in Cary, NC only had some napkins and cups. I asked an associate if there were any decorations or favors & she told me that they didn't carry those. I asked, "do you not carry them or are you just out of them". She made it clear to me that the Princess and the Frog was not a theme that they would be selling in their store. I replied with the following, "There is a new DISNEY princess & you mean to tell me that your store won't carry the party supplies?" I handed her the things that I had in my basket to purchase & told her that we won't be needing these from you and walked out of the store disgusted! I was extremely disturbed since I'm bombarded with Disney EVERYTHING when I walk into this store: Cars, Tinker-bell, Snow White, Cinderella and Mickey Mouse. They didn't even have the mylar balloons featuring Princess Tiana! I didn't want to assume this was about race but I'm at a lost as to what I should think. Not only was there just a small selection of napkins and cups, they were on the bottom shelf, pushed towards the back. I walked that aisle three times looking for something before I found those few items. I am very disappointed in this store. I came home and visited the Party City web page and found a plethora of the Princess and the Frog party supplies. I angry not just because it appears that the African-American princess is not being promoted in this store, but the MOVIE isn't either. It was a wonderful Disney movie that was full of life & culture and did not focus on race so WHY are they not selling the movie's party supplies or balloons at this location? How do I explain to my daughter why this store has every pixie, fairy, princess and super hero except the one she wants? How are we supposed to take this? What are we supposed to think? What would the Disney Corporation think if they knew about this?

I would like the General Manager and the Corporate office to explain their policy on making these things available. I need to know if it's corporation as a whole or if it's just this store; (because I do not intend on traveling to every Party City in the Triangle area of Raleigh NC to find out). If it's the corporation, there's big problem, if it's just this store then the problem is huge because this store is making an otherwise great place to shop & plan parties look bigoted & unprofessional! I would like them to provide these items to me because there is absolutely no excuse why they can't carry them in the store. I want them at no cost to me. I shouldn't have to order these party items online and pay the cost of shipping and hope they arrive in time when they should be made available in the store just as Cinderella, Belle, Tinker-bell, Snow White and Ariel are all made available. I want to feel that it's okay to purchase items featuring this beautiful African American Princess that my beautiful princess adores w/o feeling that merchants have an issue with it! I'm pretty sure that demographics and the ability to sell these products are not a problem. There are just a few Party City's in the area and many many African American dollars are likely being spent at these stores. Surely, I'm not the only person interested in buying The Princess and the Frog themed supplies.

I went online to my favourite party supply website (my former coworker
is an evet planner) and they dont carry anything princess and the
frog. Nor does my local party supply store, or wal-mart or zellers
(canadian owned, simillar to wal-mart).

Disney did produce them, but you have to order them online. I dont see
any chain in North America that carries them.

I just talked to my sister and she told me that when they went for my
neices birthday party in Disney they had the all princess party and
the princess from this movie was not there.

She said my niece had seen the movie, but didnt like it and still only
plays with the older princesses.

So it looks like Disney is even ignorning that movie.

Movie wasn't a big hit by ST Tue May 25, 2010 @ 12:55 PM

i'm thinking that what i said before is correct - they waited 14 years between major princess cartoons. sounds like the market isn't interested yet. n/t by PepperElf Tue May 25, 2010 @ 1:44 PM

The only products stores are interested in is what makes them the most
green stuff. It isn't about race, its about what sells.

First of all, you do NOT deserve the items at no cost to you. Pay for
your selections or go without.

I also agree with the other responders that you need to put the race
card away. It has nothing to do with race. Stores carry merchandise if
it moves/sells. If it doesn't, they don't carry it. That's all there
is to it.

Put the race card away. This is about money, nothing else. If Party
City thought they could make money selling MLK mylar baloons, they
would. The movie wasn't that big a seller so neither are the
characters. The public is to "blame" for that. Nobody else.

Never heard of the movie.

Does a boy like having a "princess" themed birthday party?

Whatever happened to mickey mouse for boys, minnie mouse for girls?
Gi Joe for boys, barbie for Girls?

Taking the kid to chuck E Cheese or Showbiz, with a cake with Happy
Birthday on it, is just fine for most young kids. They dont care
about all the frills of matching plates, balloons, and decor. They
care about the gifts, the games, and the fun with their friends and
parents.

Good Day

The reason it isn't there is because it doesnt sell. It is all about
supply and demand.

My twins wanted a Harry Potter birthday party. Now - online, I have
THOUSANDS of choices. In stores. Just about nothing. At least here.
This isn't because of a prejudice towards wizards with british
accents. It just means they don't move enough HP merchadise to keep in
in stock.

I can't find Alice in Wonderland themed stuff either in most stores
(well, now that might be different) my oldest adores ALice in
Wonderland and wanted an entire Alice themed party. Had to order it
all online. Again, I don't take this as an affront.

Disney themselves has less and less Princess and the Frog stuff then
they did when the movie came out. I understand your kid loves it, and
I know when you child loves something you want to be able to find it.
It just isnt always the case.

sometimes you just have to be creative by fairywithfangs Mon May 24, 2010 @ 12:31 AM

I doubt it's about race. More likely it's about what's going to sell,
and since it doesn't sound like the movie was a blockbuster hit, they
don't see the point in carrying merchandise that won't sell. I was in
Target today and saw Tinkerbell, and other princess-themed supplies,
but I do not recall seeing the Princess and the Frog. And believe me,
Target makes a point of catering to other races.

However, I also don't think it's bad feedback for the company to let
them know you'd like to see these supplies. Who knows? If enough
people like you write to them, they just might consider it.

Hey, the ads on this letter link to a place called Party Express that
claims to have The Princess and the Frog party supplies.

Maybe you can find something there.

This is exactly the reason I don't let my kids choose a theme for
their party before I know I can purchase or make items in that theme.
It's one thing to want a car themed birthday for instance, it's quite
another to have a party around a particular movie character. You
never can tell for sure which characters will become popular enough to
stick around for a while and which ones won't. Your daughter may
think that this movie is just wonderful, but I have a son who's 5 and
a daughter who's 9, and I hadn't even heard of this movie before
reading this letter.

How can this be about race? Disney hasn't had a WHITE princess in
eons. A local DJ listed them off recently -- the last 20 years' worth
have all been princesses of color, not white American-type caucasians.

Ive never even heard of this movie. Is it out yet? Did it bomb in
theaters?

Just from reading the first paragraph of this letter it seems the OP
was being rude to the staff. They explained they dont carry it and
you just wouldn't believe them.

I doubt its about race, or whatever. My niece is HUGE into Disney and
she has nothing on this movie. My guess is the movie stunk and no
one is interested in carrying items about it.

Let me explain their policy for you
Its their store they can carry what they want.

I love how people jump to race just because they cant find something
they want.

I think it came out around last Christmas and is on DVD. by Maegan Z. Sun May 23, 2010 @ 10:37 AM

And therin lies the question. The store employee in fact gave you the
opposite answer to the one you provided.

While the movie may not be focused on race, this letter seems to be.

"Surely, I'm not the only person interested in buying The Princess and
the Frog themed supplies."

How do you know that? Did you take a survey? Were there other people
in the store asking as well? Or are you simply assuming?

My thought was that maybe people just didn't want this specific
product. It does not make sense for the store to offer something that
nobody is buying. It is not worth it for them to have something on
their shelf that is simply collecting dust.

I do not think they are racists or bigots just because they do not
carry what you want when you want it. It seems that they do carry
these online, just not in store. Maybe they carry these in some stores
where the product actually moves. Who knows.

My opinion is that the merchant does not have an "issue" with it, but
simply that it is simple economics, supply and demand.
