My husband and I went to Pizza Hut in Centralia Washington. There was a very tall young black man serving people. I was appalled to see how low his pants were sagging. Then I watched as every 10 minutes he had to pull his pants up 4-5 time each 10 mins to be able to work. Who wants a servicer pulling his pants up while servicing?? Well, I told the young man who came to us that this was a family place and how gang banging clothing styles did not have a place in a restuarant by an employee. I told him I was 16 years in restaurants and even spent the last two years evaluating mgrs. and staff. I told him the young man needed to wear appropriate pants or be fired.
The next thing I knew, the word was out. Young people behind the counter were wearing their hats to side and backwards.
Pizza Hut needs to have zero policy for gang banging clothing and gestures. They need to remember that they are a family restaurant. Staff need to be told that if they can't dress appropriately and without changing hats as they are intended to be worn then they need to be looking elsewhere for employment. There are many people looking for jobs in these hard times who will not wear sagging pats and hats to side or backwards.

With your having been in the restaurant business I am a bit perplexed as to why did not direct this issue to the manager on duty. I mean this is one of managements tasks - to speak to their staff if there is an issue.
Don't get me wrong...I totally agree that saggy pants have no business being worn in public let alone a restuarant. But again, I feel you should have addressed the manager directly. All this employee did was go back and tell his co-workers who basically flipped you off by turning their hats around and telling you they do not care.

I don't think you could have picked a worse way to try and get your point across.
First, you know, as well I as I know...and most people working in the resturant, that anyone coming in to do a "review" would never. ever. let that be known. You might have worked doing this, but you weren't there to do any reviews that evening. Were you just trying to make yourself sound important? I am sure that is how it came across to the wait staff. Of course they were going to mess with you at that point. You then accused him of being a gang memeber. Klassy. You managed to add fuel to the fire while being offensive.
For someone that claims to have 16 years reviewing resturants, you obviously have no idea how to handle these types of situations.
I do agree that workers should dress for work. However, the way you went about it was just as bad as the way the server was dressed.

Your comment to the employee was inappropriate and he may have construed it as racist - while I don't like that type of dress, you should have spoken privately to the manager.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don't know what "gang banging" actually means, so you didn't mean to be as offensive as you were, not only to the young man in question but to every employee at the store - hence their united display. That said, your complaint about the pants is valid, but it would have been a lot better to bring this up to manager, not the server, and to have done so in a calm manner without lecturing about your vast experience in the restaurant business.
I don't really have a problem if they want to wear their hats backwards or to the side. As long as their hair is sufficiently held back from my food!

Your whole point and intent is right, and I completely agree with appropriate dress codes when preparing food; however, your comment to the employee was rude, offensive, and could actually be considered harassment. Your lucky he didn't bring a harassment case against you. Next time, have a better choice in words.

I don't disagree with the complaint.
I too would have complained... but NOT about the "gangsta look". Many people will take complaints like that to be offensive and will react badly to them.
I personally would have taken the sanitary complaint.
Simply put... The server is constantly pulling up his pants. It's pretty likely his hands are also touching his undershorts in this movement. So ... yeah, he's touching his shorts and then serving your food without washing his hands.
yum.
if you see him doing it again, just call the health board.

While I agree that the server's style of dress was not appropriate due to the repeated need to hike his pants back up (would suck if he tripped carrying someone's pizza, no?)
But I take FAR more offense at the sterotypical description of the employee - calling him a "gang banger" and saying dress like that had no place in a "family" restaurant.
IMHO, narrow-minded opinions like this are what has no place in a family establishment!

Since other's have already pointed out how rude and out of line you were, I'm just going to point out its highly unlikely that a "bang banger" would work at Pizza Hut. As as others have said, the act of wearing one's pants below the buttocks isn't indicative of "gang banger" clothing. The next time you see what you think is a "gang banger", less attention to how they wear their pants and more attention to their tattoo's and what, if any, sports team apparel they may be wearing. I'm sorry but saggy pants and a hat worn to the side fits the criteria for several different groups including skateboarders. And I realize you are in Washington and I am in a gang infested city in California and we may or may not have the same gangs, but gangsters typically wear their hats correctly, other than wearing them a little high on their head with the bill flat and stiff. If you are so concerned about a gangsters working at Pizza Hut then please educate yourself on the gangs in your area and what the main identifiers are.

I find it offensive, and he probably did too, that equated a style of dress with "gang banging." Rich white kids in the 'burbs dress this way. Of course, I think it's the dumbest thing ever, but you *usually* can't judge a kid by how he dresses.
I can see having a dress code for employees, however. I think you should have voiced your complaint to a manager or supervisor, not to the kid. That seems rather rude. And to demand he be fired if he didn't comply with YOUR expectations is just over the top.

I would have loved to have seen this play out.
What in the world is a "gang banging gesture"? I don't want to know if it is something obscene or involves brutality.
I would think Pizza Hut is happy to have anyone working in its stores, as long as their private parts are covered.
