I had lunch at the Red Lobster 5259 Hickory Hollow Parkway,Nashville,Tn. on March 14th,2009. I ordered the half serving of trout, which was very good,a side salad, which was a good size and good and a plain baked potato, which was very good. I did not want the brocoli so asked if I could switch it with asparagus and our server asked if I wanted to exchange it and I said yes. Nothing was said about paying extra seeing I switched vegetables. After the meal I paid my bill and did not look at the slip until I got home and realized I was charge $1.99 for the asparagus. I did not realizer I was going to be charged for the switch and wish he had said something. If I had know that I would have taken the broccoli and the asparagus. Is that a normal practice when you switch vegetables or did I miss something on the menu? Like I say the food was very good.
Thank you Barbara D.

A couple of dollars for asparagus is not worth haggling over. Now you
know, for next time. I agree with someone below who thought the
restaurant experience would be not so pleasant, if every time we asked
for something extra, however small, the waiter came back with,
"That'll be $1.99 extra, you know." And so forth, you get the
picture. Some of us just want a nice meal without worrying about a
quarter or a dollar here and there, and if a waiter gives us something
extra without charging for it, even if they could, we add it to their
tip.

Asparagus is a seasonal vegetable and sometimes is expensive
(especially at a restaurant--they often get better asparagus than
grocery stores), so I can see an extra $2 charge, but I agree that you
should have been told this in advance so you could decide whether it
was worth an extra $2 to you.

Sometimes a menu will say, "No substitutions", which means you're
stuck with what the restaurant decides to put on the blate. In your
case, broccoli.

Sometimes a menu will state that there is a charge for substitutions.
This means you can trade, but you may very likely face a charge.

I just checked Red Lobster's menu online. It clearly, clearly states
that you can upgrade from the standard broccoli to asparagus. At my
nearest RL, it's an additional $2.25.

While I agree that they should have told you, I think the reason for
the charge is that asparagus are more expensive than broccoli.

I think they should have told you that there was a charge for
requesting a substitution. The policy on this varies widely from
restaurant to restaurant, and also depends on what item is being
selected to replace the stock item. Generally speaking, unless a menu
advertises a list of vegetables to choose from, I would expect a
possible charge for a substitution.

Now at a fine dining establishment, it may be crass to say to the
diner "There is a $3 upcharge for that," when a substitution is
requested. It is a tough call. My advice in the future would be to
ask if you are going to make a switch from what is advertised.
