Bad repair job ruined my windshield

I had a rock chip in my windshield and my insurance company referred me to Safelite. The technician came out and worked on the glass, but it did not look like it had filled in properly, as the crack was still very visible. I expressed concern about this, and the technician assured me that it was fixed.

Then today when I went out to my car after work, there was a huge crack spreading from the rock chip that was supposedly "repaired." The technician obviously did not repair it correctly, and now my windshield is ruined and will need to be replaced.

I called customer service, and was told that I'd have to pay $279 for them to replace the windshield. Which is a complete ripoff, especially when they did such a terrible job repairing it in the first place.

I want my windshield replaced at no charge.

I've already spread the word to my friends, family and co-workers about the terrible "repair" job Safelite did on my windshield, and I will NEVER EVER use this company again.

Last year, I had my chips (2 of them) repaired with Safelite through
my Progressive policy on the recommendation of 2 colleagues who both
had used them with great results. Well, apparently 2 out of 3 have
GOOD experiences.

To their defense, the tech specifically informed me that there was a
chance the procedure would end up damaging the window because of the
way they do the repair, but they wouldn't know unless they tried it.
Basically it was either, leave the chip and risk it getting worse and
cracking or fix the chip and risk it getting worse and cracking. Both
options were a gamble.

Well, I wound up being unlucky number 3! Ironically, the lesser of
the two chips wound up spreading about a foot across the passenger
side of my windshield. Since it wasn't obstructing my view and I
wasn't interested in spending $349 to replace a 10 year old SUV
window, I left it go. I let my agent (who is also a good friend of
mine) know what happened and she said I could file a claim, but since
my deductible is $500, I'd be paying the whole thing out of pocket.

I think their service is basically good and I get that they can't
guarantee there won't be damage when working with glass like that, but
it's still frustrating and definitely looks bad that something
intended to FIX the problem makes it worse.

That's probably why most insurance companies don't charge you to fill
chips. If it's fixed, they aren't out much, but if it makes the glass
worse, it's usually on the policyholder.

I agree with Bill, you should contact your insurance company. They
will handle it.
