Bounced Check Policy

Posted Thu February 2, 2012 4:16 pm, by Michelle Y. written to Safeway, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company

I wrote a check to Safeway for $35 and unfortunately a check that was deposited into my account bounced which caused the check to Safeway to bounce. I was contacted by Safeway and provided my debit card. I was unaware that my bank had put a hold on my debit card because of the bounced check. I was not aware of the hold until days later when I attempted to get gas. There was no attempt by Safeway to contact me again. Three months later I received a letter from the District Attorney that I owed fines and fees in the amount of $317 and would have to enroll in check writing class. Unaware that there was a problem with this check or Safeway, I have continued to shop at Safeway using my "Safeway Card" even though I am considered to be a "criminal" by Safeway.

In researching this problem I came across this article. http://www.propublica.org/article/bounced-checks-how-local-das-get-a-cut-of-the-debt-collection-business

I would like the opportunity to pay my original bounced check plus the bank fees incurred by Safeway. I would also like to see Safeway evaluate this policy and find another solution to the bounced check problem I am sure is a legitimate concern of theirs.

I didn't even think people wrote checks to stores anymore! One reason
not to write checks in the future, what is so hard about using a debit
card??

Never depend on a cheque clearing. You must be always aware of debit
and credit on your account. Why didn't you use your debit card? I
know..

First you say...

"I wrote a check to Safeway for $35 and unfortunately a check that was
deposited into my account bounced which caused the check to Safeway to
bounce."

You go on to say say they contacted you and got your debit info, but
there was a hold on your debit.

And then....

"Unaware that there was a problem with this check or Safeway, I have
continued to shop at Safeway using my "Safeway Card" even though I am
considered to be a "criminal" by Safeway."

Did you think the problem was just going to go away? How can you be
unaware when they contacted you and TOLD you you bounced a check. You
KNEW there was a hold on your debit and that Safeway didn't get their
money...but you still got your groceries.

How can this be their fault? This is something you need to own up to.

I'm sorry, but this is not Safeway's fault. They did not deposit the
bad check into your checking account. You did. You are responsible for
the money in your account, not them.

Stop blaming them and take responsibility for your actions.

Why is this Safeway's fault?

"a check that was deposited into my account bounced "

Safeway didn't make your check bounce. Whomever wrote that bum check
to you did that.
