Plus Memberships

Write a Letter to this Company

Dear Sir,

I hate going through lines at Sam's and being pressured by the associates to sign up for a plus membership. I have to tell them "no" every time but they keep on talking. The cashiers get fired if they do not get enough pluses and so it is not really their fault; it is a bad company policy. They should keep it on record if their members have been asked recently and not overdo it. It makes me not want to come in the store and shop. I already have a regular membership and am very happy with it. Everyone I have talked to has the same complaint. It is worse there than any other store. At other places like Target or Kohl's they ask if I have a card, but if I say that I do not have one nor want one, then they leave me alone. It is not the same at Sam's. The cashiers have to get so many pluses each day or week that they get fired over it.

I'd like Sam's to change their policy and not be so pushy about selling plus memberships, which means not forcing their employees to keep asking the regular members. It is fine for them to ask the members if they would like to sign up for a plus membership once in a while, like when it comes time to renew one's membership, but that's it, otherwise their unhappy customers might reconsider signing up for a membership at all.

if it's anything like where I work, there's no way to keep track of
customers in the register on whether or not they've been asked.

I know many people think it would just take two computer clicks and
"bam! done!" but rewriting the software for every single register
across a nation... is more than two clicks.

actually i'm suppose to ask more myself but... i don't care much and
often don't make register transactions anyway cos i'm often busy
performing computer services.

as for not asking ... that's not going to happen anytime soon. many
places are pushing for it, not just the store you're writing about.
don't be surprised if you see this cropping up more and more.

Unfortunately what you are asking for will most likely never happen.
All cashiers are required to ask every customer "Would you like to
open a Kohls Card today?" or "Would you like to buy the extended
warranty?" or " Would you like to put in an application for a Sears
Card?" "What is your Zip Code/Phone Number".... basically some store
specific variation of "Would you like to buy a (mostly) unused
service. The reason is simple; many stores make more profit on those
cards/services then they do on their merchandise.

When my wife was working at Sears she had to not just ask, but push
the customer to see if she could generate a credit app or a protection
agreement (or PA, basically an extended warranty) because the gross
profit on those was anywhere from 300% to 800% the profit on the item
sold. Yes, those numbers are correct.

I am assuming that it is the same way at Sam's, I know it is the same
at Costco; one of Sam's Club's competitors. I know it is a pain but
every time you check out I would say to the cashier some variation of:
"No. I do not have a + account, I do not want a + account. I do not
want to buy anything extra such as an extended warranty; I know you
are doing your job but everything I want to buy is in my cart. Thank
you."
