Sam's Club Discover Card Offer a Lie

Posted Sat December 9, 2006 12:00 pm, by Lenore H. written to Sam's Club

Write a Letter to this Company

I was told by a Sam's Club representative at the membership desk that if I opened a Sam's Club Discover card on November 24th (while at the Mebane, NC store) that I would get 10 percent off my first purchase. I had planned on buying a HDTV and was very eager to get this offer. There was no paperwork anywhere stating this, but they kept telling me it would show up on my first bill.

Being a little sceptical because I didn't see any paperwork on this, my husband went and asked a sales rep. with a clipboard with the Discover card if the 10 percent was true, and she said it was not, only $20 would be taken off my first purchase. There also was a sign by the cash registers that told of this $20.00 offer. I purchased a HDTV and a few other items, bringing my total to over $1700.00. They told me the credit would be on my first bill.

I just received my bill and there is no credit at all for signing up. I am very upset at Sam's Club, since I planned on buying the TV to get the 10 percent off, as my husband had gotten a Discover Card with Sam's Club the previous weekend when the 10 percent off paperwork was near the cash registers. He had signed up and been told he would get the 10 percent off HIS first bill. His first bill did NOT reflect the 10 percent off, and when he called, he was told his purchase had to be over $1500.00. This was NOT told to him when he applied for the card.

I believe that Sam's Club employees in the Mebane, NC Branch do not tell the truth, and I want my $20.00 off my first bill. Thank You!

I want my $20.00 back that they promised me. I would NOT have opened the Discover Card they got me to get if I had not been told this lie. I am really upset about the 10 percent off my first bill lie which was the main reason I went to the Sam's Club to buy a TV. I bought the TV anyway, and at least expect the $20.00 that the Paperwork SHOWED they would give.

I think you should get your story straight first before you call
anyone one a lair.

Sam's Club has a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Talk to the local
manager and they will refund the difference.

From what I can understand, your husband filled out the application
for one card and then you filled out an application for a second card;
neither time did you request the discount promotion in writing.

The letter does seem very confusing to me and asking for a $20
discount where a $200 discount was promised seems that much more
troublesome.

As someone reading this letter, I'd start to question the truthfulness
of the story.

This is very confusing.

You say you need to spend $1500.00 in order to get the 10% credit. You
claim you spent $1700.00 so why did not receive the credit if you
spent your $1700.00 like you claim.

Next instead of fighting for the $200 you are fighting for $20.00.
This does not make any sense to me at all. I think you should try
re-writing the letter.

Yes, I know what you mean: they did the same to us about 2 years ago
in the Aurora, CO store. It was the assistant manager- he told us we
would get 10% off the first purchase and then 5% from thereafter. We
read the "small print" and challanged him to his lie.
In fact, there is a complicated tier of spending amounts and we found
you have to spent something like 20K a month to get the 5%. (don't
hold me to that figure- it's been a few years.) Besides, we wouldn't
use Discover if they gave us 75% off!. They have the worst customer
service in the world.) So, in closing I can tell you that you probably
were not lied to, but rather I will suggest to you that most of the
management and staff at Sam's are ill-trained in those areas of
knowledge.

Have you tried contacting management at a local level? Sometimes
issues like this can be resolved by simply calling management at a
local leval. If not, have you tried calling the corporate office? I
really believe that calmly calling and talking with someone will get
you further than a letter. It's worth a try.
