PLEASE Advertise Pledge Pet Hair Sweeper as REUSABLE

Posted Thu June 4, 2009 12:00 pm, by Kelsie G. written to SC Johnson and Son, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company

I was very hopeful when I saw the Pledge Fabric Sweeper for Pet Hair advertised on television. My mother has three cats and I own two, so we're constantly on the watch for something that will make it easier to get the hair off of our upholstery. We purchased a Fabric Sweeper this evening, and I was utterly dismayed to discover that the packaging instructed the user to DISPOSE of the Sweeper when it was full.

For starters, our Sweeper filled up in roughly ten minutes. There was no way we were going to rush out to the store and purchase a new sweeper after having just bought one! Even if the inconvenience of going to purchase a second Fabric Sweeper had not been an issue, though, there's another reason we would not have bought another--we are earth-conscious people who recognize several key stewardship issues: A). plastic products will remain on our earth for many hundreds of years, and, while the Fabric Sweeper is EXTREMELY useful, it is not something people should be finding in their gardens 600 years from now B). Plastic is a petroleum product. One of our most controversial and precious resources is our oil, and while plastic has its place in the world (in the medical industry, for example), keeping it at a minimum in our day to day lives will help preserve our oil supplies for more important uses. C). We have become a throwaway society, and making something so useful that can be so needlessly thrown away only reinforces the "toss it and forget it" mentality that is resulting in the trashing of our planet.

Because I could not fathom the idea of tossing such a large (and wonderful!) piece of plastic into the trash, I was delighted to discover that the top of the Pet Hair Sweeper can simply be popped off. The sweeper can then be emptied and re-used again...and again...and again.

I was driven to write this letter, then, because you have an awesome product that COULD potentially be far more earth friendly than it is simply by CHANGING THE WORDING ON THE PACKAGE. Let people KNOW that the Pet Hair Sweeper is actually a REUSABLE product, and watch your sales figures soar--particularly in this era of eco-conscious living.

Thank you for your time.

also another good way to keep cat hair levels down is to brush the
kitties out a lot.

granted if you have multiple cats it can be time consuming... and some
cats would rather try batting at the brush, but it can help ;)

This is going to sound crazy, but the best tool I've found to clean my
couches of pet hair is... *drum roll* a rubber glove. I kid you not,
it's that simple, I put the glove on and 'sweep' my couch, so I have a
'fur line' at the edge, then gather that up. It works wonders!
Another great (although expensive) tool is the Furminator. I don't
buy any of the sprays or anything, but the brush is AMAZING! My
husband is allergic to cats and dogs, and we have two cats and a dog,
so we use anything to keep the hair at a minimum.

I too bought the Sweeper and was disappointed to find out it was
disposable! I didn't know you could pop the top off, but I did manage
to pop out one of the rollers to empty it so I could reuse it multiple
times. After a few more uses, the brushes that pick up the hair became
so coated, even cleaning the hair off the brush didn't work after a
while. Scotch Brand has a new product called the "Fur Fighter" that
is reusable.....you just have to buy the pad refills. I will try this
product next instead of buying another Sweeper.

Good point. I'm not sure what to think of this. This company has
historically taken steps to be green, so lets hope this trend
continues.
I'm sure they're aware that it is reusable yet they tell you to throw
it away. I think it may be a quality issue. Maybe once its opened,
there is slightly less performance, or in tests it did not do as good
of a job. It is not noticable to the everyday person such as you, but
if somebody were to analyze it, they could go around demanding a
refund or sue them, etc. It may be a way to cover their butt when they
know everybody will re-use it.

That is exactly what the company wants you to do, so you will go out
and buy more. I don't believe the average company really cares more
about our landfills than their bottom line.

As RHWG points out, a possible response to this is the company will
make the top fixed. I hope that doesn't happen.

Here's a thought - if the packaging is changed to reflect it is
reusable, they may raise the price quite a bit.

I've seen commercials for this, and they don't say that it's
disposable! I would have purchased it EXPECTING to reuse it... many,
many times (I have three cats).

Great letter and great suggestion.

However... Now I'm afraid they'll change it so you can't remove the
top, and do whatever they can to make it a one-use product.
