Sears Doesn't Stand Behind Their Lawn Mowers

Posted Wed July 15, 2009 12:00 pm, by William M. written to Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I bought a SEARS lawn mower. First, it was supposed to be 20%, but I was charged the full amount. Second, the lawn mower won't start. I wasted time to pick it up, time to assemble it, wasted $20 in gas to fill it just for it not to start. I contacted SEARS, but they refuse to do anything.

SEARS needs to stand behind its products.

I e-mailed, faxed, and called SEARS but to no avail.

I'd hate to live where you do, gas must be over $5.00 a gallon.

Out of the box I unfolded the handle and added gas to it. What other
assembly did you have to do that "wasted" your time. I assume all are
basically like this, unless you got one of those manual push behind
non-motor kinds.

Always retain receipts should this situation arise and for warranty
issues. I will assume you could not prove proof of purchase and
therfore out of gas.

This is like the second letter from someone who purchased a Sears
mower and it would not start.

You do not say when you purchased it...if it was within the past 90
days then take it back.

As for the 20% off...this is something I would think you would notice
when you purchase it.

Have you read the owner's manual? Maybe there's a safety switch of
some kind that needs to be released?

If it's a Craftsman mower (and I think it is since you said SEARS
mower) then it was 20% off a few days ago. Well, I think so at least.
I know Craftsman was running a sale and I suppose it would include the
lawn mowers. I don't recall any pricing issues relating to that
promotion.

If you bought it less than 90 days ago, you have a solid case. You
could bring it back to the store, along with your receipt. A lot of
the big stores have someone on hand in the daytime (as in, before 4
PM) that can look at the mower and tell you what your problem is. Some
stores don't, though. Since it's been used, they might want you to
take it to the service center to be serviced and if they can't fix it,
they'll give you some paperwork and you can go back to the store and
get a new one.

It just seems strange to me that no one wants to help you over
something as little as this. Have you talked to your sales person?
Have you called the lawn and garden department and talked to a
manager?

Good luck.

So you told them it won't start, and they refused to lift a finger to
help you? Are they selling lawn mowers without a warranty now?

Well I hope you don't expect them to stand in FRONT of their
lawnmowers! Nyuk nyuk

Didn't you realize you paid too much at the time?
Second, if the mower is faulty, they should stand behind it. It is
still under warranty most likely if the purchase was recent.

$20 dollars to fill the tank?

Even if its a riding lawnmower, which you dont state, it wouldnt be
more than 3 gallons.

Furthermore, you didnt realize how much you were charged when you
purchased it? Did you look at the receipt?

Good Day

William,
I am assuming at each call you made you spoke with the manager or
ranking supervisor. Plus I am also assuming that this purchase took
place in the last 30 days.
If you have proof of the 20% sale and you have proof of purchase that
should be any easy one for either Sears or your credit card company
should you opt to dispute the charge.
My Sears mower experience has not been a bed of roses but the most
blatant problems were oversights on my part.
Some mowers have a cock valve under the gas tank. Could it be as
simple that your's has one and it is cranked shut?
Should you not hear back in a reasonable amount of time I suggest you
log on to: http://www.sears.com/
and explore the Customer Service Tab.
Good luck and stop back and let us know how this all shakes out.
BillR.
