Unable to use my Staples Gift Card Online

I cannot express my disbelief at this moment with a Staples policy that I have just now become aware of. I recently purchased a 75.00 Staples Gift Card online that I planned to use for printer cartridges. Our nearest Staples is about a 40 mile round trip so the gift card was purchased to save me gas money on a trip to Staples. Imagine my displeasure when I prepare my order and cannot find where to enter my gift card info. Connect to Staples chat and am informed that I CANNOT USE MY STAPLES GIFT CARD AT STAPLES.COM. I have to drive 40 miles to use it at the retail store. This is quite likely the most insane policy I have ever encountered. I will never purchase another gift card obviously. In fact I think someone on Ebay will benefit from this asinine regulation quite regularly as I will now purchase everything I normally get at Staples from them. Whom ever came up with this ridiculous idea should be demoted ASAP. I did an online search to see if I was the only person upset by this and this is certainly not the case. Considering how many potential customers have posted their displeasure over this I am further surprised that Staples has not taken action to remedy this situation already.

I would like to have my 75.00 returned to me as I am not able to use this card in the way I had intended.

I guess I'm the only one that thinks it's absolutely insane not to
take gift cards on an ecommerce site. What are they afraid of -- that
they will actually make money?

I'm guessing it's about technical issues by RedheadwGlasses Thu October 25, 2012 @ 9:25 AM

It's probably something to do with fraud prevention by PepperElf Thu October 25, 2012 @ 10:33 AM

no, I think it is pretty silly as well by fairywithfangs Thu October 25, 2012 @ 2:33 PM

This page makes it clear that when you buy a gift card online, they
MAIL it to you. That was your first clue that this is not an egift
card.

Why didn't you check into this prior to buying a gift card?

Contacting their telephone orders? (1-800-333-3330). You may find
that they can figure out a way to do it that way.

However, as others mentioned, anytime you purchase a gift card with a
specific use in mind, you really need to check for any stipulations.
Not checking that is not the fault of the company.

Before attempting to use your staples gift card, you need to FIRST
read their website so you know whether or not you can use the gift
card online. As another poster indicated, Staples DID include that
information on their website. You just have to read the information.

It is up to Staples whether or not they want to change their policy
regarding using their gift cards online to make a purchase.

Why should the Staples employee be demoted just because he/she made a
decision regarding customers not being able to use their gift cards
online? To be that is a bit too much.

I would imagine that Staples IS NOT the only retail store that does
this. Would you be complaining about other retail stores that do this?

Oop.. meant to me that is a it too much by spunkyboy08 Wed October 24, 2012 @ 5:59 PM

indeed it is too much to demote any employee for something they already made clear by PepperElf Thu October 25, 2012 @ 6:52 AM

hah and I had my own typo too! "employee's" not "employees". LOL. N/T by PepperElf Thu October 25, 2012 @ 6:52 AM

Even if you didn't pay attention to it and "just" became aware of
it... it's right there in dark grey & white. They specifically say
this cannot be used in place of a credit card.

Here's an example, the first gift card I clicked on:

http://www.staples.com/Staples-Awesome-Gift-Card-100/product_SS1094080

What's interesting is if you look at the product details you'll see
that they specifically state you can only use the card at Staples US
Retail stores - TWICE. The first time is even on a line-item all by
itself. The second is in the T&C, immediately followed by a statement
that it cannot be used for credit card payments.

So of course you're mad.... the problem is, they are not to blame for
this misconception. In fact they've gone out of their way - more so
than other stores I've seen - in stating that it can't be used in that
manner.

You can ask them to return your money, but they are not obliged to
really.
